Senators reflected on their accomplishments in the final Senate meeting of the semester. The meeting began with a motion to dissolve the Swimming Club. Senator-at-Large Noah Nguyen ’21 explained that last fall, the club went on probationary status and was granted a second probationary term in the spring after failing to meet the requirements for club funding in the first term. The second probationary term ended on Oct. 3, Nguyen said, during which the club again failed to meet the requirements for Student Union funding. The motion to dissolve the club passed unanimously, by a vote of acclamation.

Students and Brandeis Dining Services staff met to discuss menus for the resident dining halls for the spring 2019 semester at the final Senate Dining Committee meeting of the semester on Wednesday. According to Operations Director Stan Park, this meeting gave attendees an opportunity to express their wishes regarding menus for the upcoming semester that will be put together over winter break.

So far this season, the men's basketball team has faced many fierce competators and looks forward to many more. Some previous matchups against the Judges include the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, which resulted in a win for the Judges, Suffolk College, a loss for the Judges and four victories against Bates College, Lasell College, Salem State University, Babson College and Becker College. This Saturday, the Judges ended their streak after a loss to Wesleyan University. The Judges look forward to 14 more games between now and the end of February.

The Brandeis women’s basketball team is now in the midst of a two-game losing streak following their most recent loss against Gordon College, as they continue their 2018-19 season. The Judges now sit with an overall record of 3–5 and have yet to play any conference games against University Athletic Association rivals. The Judges continue to press forward despite having only eight healthy players on their roster, according to the Brandeis Athletics website, proving a hurdle for the team.

After months of deliberation, the Board of Trustees adopted a set of policies regarding fossil fuel investments at their November meeting, updating the 1973 guidelines that previously informed their investment decisions. Brandeis students have been pressing the administration to divest from fossil fuels for several years and have continued to do so in response to the recent policy announcement.

The Judges are pressing forward this season and have played against some very talented competition. Saturday, the Judges’ record improved to 3–3 after a very impressive game where they conquered the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats. Although the Judges have played several games since the last issue of the Justice, this article will focus on this game because of all of the action that took place.The final score was a notable 77–60 victory for Brandeis.

Speaking to the Brandeis community at the Women’s Studies Research Center, scholar Pnina Abir-Am described the legacy of former Prof. Carolyn Cohen (BIOL). Abir-Am is widely published on the history of women and gender in science, the history of molecular biology and the history of public memory, according to the Brandeis Women’s Studies Research Center website. Cohen was the University’s first female biology professor and served as a spokeswoman and mentor for women in science.

The women’s basketball team has started off their season with one win and one loss, creating an overall record of 1–1 with no games yet in the University Athletic Association. Between the rookies and the returning players, the team brings a large amount of talent to the court, making the prospects of this season strong.

As of Sunday evening, the men’s basketball team had won two out of the first three games of the 2018-19 season. The game on the evening of Monday, Nov. 19 will be reported on in the next issue of the Justice, but the final score and a summary of the game’s action are available on the University’s Athletics website as well.

On Saturday, the season officially ended for the women’s soccer team, as the Judges were defeated by Farmingdale State College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. With this close to their season, the 19th-ranked Judges achieved a season record 12–5, and the 25th-ranked Rams improved to 17–3–3 and went on to to play at the College of New Jersey on Sunday, according to the Brandeis Athletics website. Ultimately, the results of this game came down to one shot from the Rams and led to a score of 1–0 for the game that took place at the College of New Jersey.

This weekend, the Judges played their last three games of the 2018 season. The women have had a pretty strong year, ending with an overall record of 13–17. The Judges have had their best season in the UAA in nearly a decade.

University President Ron Liebowitz urged the Brandeis community to strive for a strong, secure and sustainable future in a speech outlining his vision for the University yesterday. About 350 people attended the all-campus presidential announcement, with more watching the livestream, in which he shared the “Brandeis Value Proposition,” his framework for the University’s future.

The Judges continued their season this week with two games against non-University Athletic Association rivals Wellesley College and the University of Massachusetts-Boston. With the two losses that resulted from these matches, the Judges are now 11–16 overall for the season. Looking ahead, the Judges will play at the UAA tournament on Friday at the University of Rochester, where they will take on UAA rivals Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University. Brandeis is currently 0–7 in the UAA.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams both wrapped up their fall seasons with two different matches. The men’s team attended the Tufts-Deis Invitational that was held at both Brandeis and Tufts Universities, and the women’s team attended the Middlebury Hidden Duals at Middlebury College. The teams continue to fight a strong set of matches against their opponents.

The Judges improved this week, breaking their most recent four-game losing streak. They won the past three matches with an impressive match score of 3–0 against all three opponents. They have improved to 11–14 overall, and looking ahead, the Judges will face Wellesley College on Thursday.

The Brandeis Librarians’ Union expressed frustration over their contract negotiations with the University in a campaign during Family Weekend. The BLU, which is connected to the Service Employees International Union Local 888, have been negotiating with the University administration since June 2018 to collectively bargain for fair contracts for Brandeis librarians, according to a flyer handed out by members of the Union. (University Librarian Matthew Sheehy, a representative for the University in the negotiations, clarified in an email to the Justice that Internet and Technology Services is not a part of this negotiation.)
