French: Univ endowment down 25 percent, budget gap projected to grow to $23 milion by 2014

Brandeis has experienced a 25-percent drop in its endowment from $712 million at the end of June 2008 to $549 million at the end of December 2008 and is projecting annual operating deficits ranging from $4 million in fiscal 2009 to $23 million in fiscal 2014, according to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Peter French.French gave a presentation to students explaining the University's financial situation during an open forum yesterday at which he and other senior administrators addressed the student body and answered students' questions.

Students raise $1500 of aid in first stage of Revive Mumbai campaign

A group of seven Brandeis students has raised $1500 as part of the Revive Mumbai initiative in response to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to Naman Pugalia '09, an Indian student who is a resident of South Mumbai and who has spearheaded the initiative.During the attacks, gunmen killed 173 people and injured 308 after occupying several upscale hotels frequented by Western tourists over the Thanksgiving weekend.


Proposal cuts $2.1M from 2010 budget

University President Jehuda Reinharz accepted a proposal made by the Special Faculty Advisory Committee to meet a budget cut target of $2.1 million for fiscal year 2010 by reducing administrative staff, reducing the hiring of adjunct faculty, increasing class sizes, reducing the number of new Ph.D.


Students speak out about JuicyCampus

Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer urged students last Wednesday to speak out against the gossip Web site JuicyCampus.com in response to student requests for the administration to take action against the site and potentially ban it from campus computers.Posts related to Brandeis started appearing on the site in early and mid-October.


Student leaders met with Reinharz to discuss budget decisions

About 35 student leaders met with President Jehuda Reinharz last Friday for a Q-and-A session about the University's budget crisis, according to Student Union President Jason Gray '10, who recommended the meeting to the administration.Gray said that Reinharz updated the students on the budget cuts and answered questions.
