Commuters find lounge a boost

A coordinated effort between Union Vice President Erica Lemansky '06 and Transferring Commuter Coordinator for Orientation Rachel Suberi raised $500 this summer to revamp the commuter lounge on the third floor of the Shapiro Campus CenterThe lounge had previously been used as more of a building storage space.The lounge now includes two love seats, four armchairs, a magazine-rack, a coffee maker and a television.


Coke machiness vandalized; cops suspect protest

Several vending machines on campus were discovered to have severed electrical cords on April 16. According to University Police, the vandalism is suspected to be an act of protest against the Coca-Cola Company, which is the exclusive provider of soft drinks to the University.


Kennedy speaks at Heller's 45th

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., delivered the keynote address on achieving a strong middle class to around 500 people in the Schwartz Auditorium Saturday morning as part of the weekend-long celebration of the Heller School's 45th anniversary.Heller School Dean Jack Shonkoff, who was also honored for his decade of service in the position, offered some thoughts before University President Jehuda Reinharz introduced Kennedy."The Heller School, since it was founded, has always been an academic institution with rigorous scholarship and with active public engagement," Shonkoff said.


FDA delay on contraception upsets FMLA

Approximately 1,370,000 abortions occur each year. About half could be prevented through the use of emergency contraception (EC), according to the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA). FMLA and other organizations point to studies including one conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, which found that two percent of women in the United States have used EC and only 11 percent of American women have even heard of EC.After the Food and Drug Administration delayed a decision to make EC available over the counter on Feb.


Schlangel wins in landslide

Less than one third of the student body voted in the recent Union elections, in which current Union President Joshua Brandfon '05 lost to Finance Board Chair Mark Schlangel '05 by a landslide mandate.
