It was just five years ago when Natalia Wiater ’20 (2018-2019 Managing Editor) and I — entering my term as Managing Editor — arrived on the Brandeis campus for the 2019 Brandeis University Alumni Weekend. As the 70th Anniversary of the Justice, we met with many alumni of our newspaper in the Shapiro Campus Center (SCC) office, talking about the history of our beloved publication. We talked about areas of growth the Justice experienced over those 70 years, areas where nothing had changed, and areas where the paper still needed to develop. In many ways, that weekend feels like yesterday, and reflecting on my time at the Justice brings up so many positive memories and much appreciation for how the Justice led me to where I am today.

At a time when social distancing is the new norm and many of us are staying inside, healthcare workers and emergency responders are working to keep their communities safe. According to a March 19 New York Times article, physicians are saying that there is a shortage of protective gear including masks, eye gear and gowns needed to keep them safe while treating the increasing number of patients in hospitals as a result of the coronavirus.

Given the financial uncertainty institutions are facing as a result of the coronavirus, the University is taking specific steps to respond to the emerging economic situation, according to a March 30 address from University President Ron Liebowitz.

In response to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, the University has moved its classes online and required that students who live on campus leave by Wednesday, instead of the previous date of March 25, University President Ron Liebowitz announced in an email on Monday.

Harvest Table Culinary Group, a subsidiary of Aramark Corporation, presented as the third Request For Proposals presentation on Thursday in Sherman Function Hall. After the members of the Harvest Table team introduced themselves, they began to present their vision for Brandeis Dining Services.

Based in Palo Alto, California, Bon Appetit Management Company visited Brandeis for the second of four Request For Proposals presentations on Wednesday in Sherman Function Hall. Throughout the event, Bon Appetit leadership staff presented what they would do if they were the next Brandeis dining vendor.

Provost Lisa Lynch announced new travel restrictions regarding Italy, Iran and South Korea and their corresponding travel advisory levels in two updates sent to the Brandeis community this past week. A follow up email from the Brandeis Health Center also announced a website that deals with the University’s response to the new coronavirus.

The Judges snapped their three-game losing streak with a win against University Athletic Association rival Case Western Reserve University on Friday. Two days later, the Judges lost to Carnegie Mellon University, another UAA rival. These games bring the team record to 13–7 overall and 3–6 in the UAA.

The women’s basketball team has five University Athletic Association matchups under their belt. After splitting this weekend with one victory against the Washington University in St. Louis Bears and one loss against the University of Chicago Maroons, the team has a UAA record of 2–3. Overall, the team has a winning record of 12–4.

In partnership with Team IMPACT, the Brandeis men’s basketball team drafted Jack Dollar to be part of their team on Dec. 12, 2019. According to a Newton Wickedlocal article, Dollar, an 11-year-old resident of Newton, is a student at the Campus School at Boston College and lives with epilepsy.
