New faces in town, hopeful expectations for this season’s Boston Celtics

The National Basketball Association commenced its preseason game schedule on Oct. 5. The Boston Celtics have played three games­two against the Philadelphia 76ers and one against the New York Knicks. Since this is the preseason, this article will not dive deep into what causes the wins or losses in these matchups but will instead discuss some valuable takeaways for the Celtics going into the 2023-24 NBA season.


Historical Diamond League Final Recap

The Diamond League had its final meet of 2023 before the upcoming Olympic season, the Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, Oregon on September 16 and 17. The Diamond League series consists of 15 annual one-day outdoor invitationals throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In order to compete in the Diamond League series, an athlete must be invited to compete in some of the 14 meets between May and September of that year. To have the opportunity to compete in the Diamond League's final meet, athletes must score the highest number of points in previous series meets by placing first to eighth to collect points respectively. For the final meet, the top 6 to 10 scorers in each event, depending on the type of event, will then compete for the title of Diamond League Champion.


Damian Lillard joins the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-way trade

On Sept. 27, the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA announced that they had acquired Damian Lillard, a seven-time all-star point guard, in a three-way trade. The Portland Trail Blazers, in return for Lillard’s departure, received center Deandre Ayton and forward Toumani Camara from the Phoenix Suns as well as Jrue Holiday, who they later traded to the Boston Celtics, and a couple of draft picks from the Milwaukee Bucks. The Phoenix Suns welcomed center Jusuf Nurkic, shooting guard Keon Johnson, and small forward Nassir Little from Portland and landed shooting guard Grayson Allen from Milwaukee. 


Wrapping up the 2023 Basketball World Cup

The International Basketball Federation, or FIBA, held their 2023 World Cup, a two week global basketball thriller, from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10. This year’s World Cup was hosted by three Asian countries — Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines — and featured a total of 32 teams from all over the world. Cape Verde, Georgia, Latvia, and South Sudan all made their debut to the biggest international basketball stage and amazed the world with their talent. 












Brandeis Baseball drops UAA series to Case Western Reserve

Luck has not favored the Brandeis Baseball team this season. Sitting with a record of 5-27, the team has struggled to compete both in conference and out. In their University Athletic Association match-up versus Emory University, the Eagles scored a combined 62 runs in their Saturday, April 8 doubleheader — 31 runs in each game. The margin of difference — 4-31 and 7-31 in game one and two, respectively — were so great that the MLB website ran a story on its account. With 12 first-year players on the roster, the Judges have certainly felt the growing pains this season. 


The Boston Celtics lead 3–1 against the Atlanta Hawks

Troubled by some late-season injuries, the Boston Celtics marched into the 2023 National Basketball Association postseason as the second seed of the Eastern Conference. They are squaring off against the Atlanta Hawks, who fended off the Miami Heat to secure the seventh-seed spot in the play-in tournament, in the first round of playoffs. 


UEFA’s final four: A Grudge Match and a Derby

With only four teams left in the 2022-23 Union of European Football Associations Champions League campaign, there are many captivating storylines to discuss. One side of the bracket sees the dominant Real Madrid squaring off with powerhouse Manchester City in a rematch of last year’s iconic semifinal. The other side features two teams from Milan fighting for the pride of the city on top of a spot in the final.
