On Feb. 1, the Brandeis Judges hosted the Eric Sollee Invitational at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center. The women’s and men’s teams posted a 7–5 combined record with the women going 4–2 with and the men 3–3.
Lisa Lynch will depart from her role as provost and executive vice-president of Academic Affairs by this summer, according to a Jan. 21 email to the Brandeis community from University President Ron Liebowitz. Lynch first stepped into the role in June 2016. According to the email, Lynch will be taking a year- long sabbatical and will then return to Brandeis to continue in her position as the Maurice B. Hexter Professor of Social and Economic Policy in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Liebowitz wrote in the email that the process for selecting the next Provost will be announced shortly. The email did not specify why Lynch was stepping down.
Released on Nov. 22, 2019, the long awaited sequel “Frozen 2” sent a chill down its viewers’ spines. With a score of 76% on RottenTomatoes, this film seemed to nicely wrap up some questions viewers were left wondering six years ago when the original film was released. The film seems to break Disney’s trend of poor sequels due to its overwhelming popularity following its release. This sequel has so far earned a record -breaking $123.7 million on Thanksgiving weekend and won the domestic box office for two weekends in a row.
All the way back in the now ancient-year of 2008, a bygone era when Tik Tok was neither social media platform nor Ke$ha single, the Democratic Party’s presidential primary was mired in a nasty state of affairs by its conclusion. Long thought to have the contest in the bag, Senator Hillary Clinton slowly lost ground to political newcomer Barack Obama over the course of a lengthy and bruising primary season.
After their blowout win against the University of Rochester and thrilling upset of Emory University last week, the Judges looked to continue their momentum in the Midwest. They suffered their fourth loss of the season in St. Louis on Friday night before escaping the University of Chicago in another down-to-the-wire finish.
The women’s basketball team has five University Athletic Association matchups under their belt. After splitting this weekend with one victory against the Washington University in St. Louis Bears and one loss against the University of Chicago Maroons, the team has a UAA record of 2–3. Overall, the team has a winning record of 12–4.

Both the men’s and women’s fencing teams faced tough competition at the Brandeis Invitational held on Dec. 1. The men ended the day with a 2–3 record and the women had a 1–4 record for the day.
Judges 89, Vikings 49
The eduroam WiFi network has been fixed after there were a number of connectivity issues across the Brandeis campus, which began on Nov. 12 and continued through Nov. 19, according to the Brandeis Status website.
The Judges’ men’s basketball team took two out of three games last week, winning a pair of close games at home on either side of a blowout loss at Suffolk University. The Judges are now 3–2 on the season and have exciting prospects going forward with impressive depth on their bench.
The Judges split their most recent games, defeating the Roger Williams University Hawks and losing to the Tufts University Jumbos. The Judges are currently at a record of 3–1 for the season and have yet to play any University Athletic Association Conference games. So far, the team is off to a decent start, and even their loss to the Jumbos was a very close contest.
The Brandeis Rowing Team was established in 1986 and is based out of Stoller Boathouse in Newton, MA. The team shares the boathouse with Lasell College and Community Rowing Inc. This year’s captains are Viking Mayor ’20 and Ethan Miller ’22, and the coaches are team member Alex Gavriel and former Justice Editor in Chief Abby Patkin ’18. The team is committed to upholding the academic integrity of Brandeis while striving to achieve success in the competitive world of collegiate rowing. The Brandeis team competes as a co-ed organization in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Club Sports.
The Brandeis Women’s Rugby Team is a student-run club where the team trains college rugby players, many of whom graduate and move on to continue their rugby careers at the senior level. There is no experience required or expected to join rugby, and in fact, most new members of the team have never played or seen a rugby game. This year’s captains are Diana Epstein ’22 and Sarah Pechet ’21.
The University administration made changes to the student handbook this semester to mandate the administration’s prior approval of protest demonstrations by student groups. The changes to Section 7.1 of the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook makes campus demonstrations more difficult, according to a student activist group that spoke with the Justice. The language in 7.1 is identical to a section in the Princeton University handbook, but Brandeis applies it differently.
On Nov. 7, the Spring 2020 semester course registration reopened and will remain open through Jan. 27. Registration opened over a month earlier than it had in previous years and also opened earlier than it was initially planned for this year.
