Though Hannah Brown ’19 is running unopposed in the 2018 Student Union presidential election, her wealth of experience in the Union, comprehensive platform and knowledge of how to bring her visions to reality make her a natural choice. As such, this board chooses to endorse her as the next Union president.

Student Union President Jacob Edelman ’18 came to the Senate’s weekly meeting to discuss the reasoning behind the purchase of a television in the Student Union conference room. The purchase was previously met with mixed reception in the Nov. 12 Senate meeting, with multiple senators expressing concerns that the television was an unnecessary expenditure.
The Brandeis University fencing teams continued their strong starts to the season with impressive showings at the first meet of the Northeast Fencing Conference. Both the women’s and men’s teams dominated their competition, as the women came away with a 6-1 record and the men a 5-0 mark against other top college teams from the region.

Eli Wasserman ’20 and Rehman Ibrahim ’19 presented to the Senate on behalf of the Brandeis Society for International Affairs for probationary status. Wasserman stated that Boston is a hub for international affairs and that bringing various speakers and allowing the community to engage with various nongovernmental organizations would be beneficial. Wasserman also said that BSIA would serve as a space outside of the classroom to discuss international affairs.
The Senate voted on two clubs and discussed new initiatives this Sunday. The Senate voted in favor of chartering the Veg Club. Erin Gawronski ’18 and Siwar Mansour ’19 presented to the Senate on behalf of the Swim Club. The Swim Club seeks to provide an outlet for students to swim in a non-competitive environment. Gawronski, a former varsity swimmer and senior member of the Swim Club, said that the hardships of maintaining a student-athlete balance cause many people to quit the varsity swimming team. Class of 2019 Senator Benedikt Reynolds was concerned that the club would turn away people who did not know how to swim, to which Class of 2020 Senator Tal Richtman replied that the University already has an instruction program for those who do not know how to swim. Gawronski added that the club needs funding to hire lifeguards so it can increase the pool’s hours and hold practices. The Senate unanimously voted to provide the club with probationary club accreditation.
At the weekly Senate meeting on Sunday, Student Union Vice President Hannah Brown ’19 announced that Allocations Board member Kate Kesselman ’19 was voted representative to the Community Emergency and Enhancement Fund.
Following last week’s meeting with the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, Student Union Vice President Hannah Brown ’19 reported at Sunday’s Senate meeting that the committee has already taken some suggestions to the General Education Requirements proposal into account. The proposals will be brought to the Faculty Senate next week.
As the Student Union and the Brandeis community evolve, the Office of Student Rights and Advocacy is ready to return to the forefront of Brandeis student resources. Due to the Student Union’s efforts to bring back the OSRA — particularly those of Student Union Vice President Hannah Brown ’19 and OSRA Director Zosia Buse ’20 — University students will have a peer resource to go to if academic or campus-related problems ever arise.
As the Student Union determines its priorities for this academic year, this board would like to offer suggestions for how Union leaders may better serve the Brandeis community.
