Highlighting a new season of cosmetics
JustArts offers beauty tips from the fall 2010 ready-to-wear shows
Tall boots, whimsical scarves and light-weight coats remind us women that it is time to switch up our wardrobes from summer to fall. As the weather changes, we sometimes forget to change our beauty routines. While it's important to continue using sunscreen, the fall 2010 ready-to-wear shows highlighted new makeup looks to match our warmer fall clothes. One of the best beauty looks was seen at the 3.1 Phillip Lim fashion show, because a diverse range of models pulled off the same shades of makeup. After lightly concealing any imperfections, a rosy pink blush was swept onto the apples of the cheeks in an upward motion, almost hitting the temples. A light hand is necessary, because a natural flush is what you're aiming for. Some people prefer to put highlighter on before applying any base makeup, because it gives a "lit-from-within" glow. However, if you choose to do it after applying your base and blush, simply dab it on the bridge of the nose and on the cheekbones (if your nose tends to get oily during the day, only apply it to the cheekbones).
The way the eyes were enhanced on the models was unique: Navy eyeliner on the bottom lash line was mixed with pinks and purples on the lid. Of course, you don't want to look like you have pink eye, so the best way to apply the shadows is to put the lighter pinks on the lid, underneath the brow bone and near the inner corner of the eye, and the darker purples in the crease for definition. The models' lips were pale pink with a subtle frost effect. Try a nonglossy lip balm prior to applying lipstick. That way, it will go on smoothly. The color palette is reminiscent of the 1980s, so to keep it modern, all you have to do is keep your hair sleek.
While the 3.1 look might be reserved for the weekend, depending on how daring you are, a more muted look was shown at the Stella McCartney show. The quintessential, "no makeup makeup look" complemented McCartney's clean yet geometric designs. This look is great for when you come straight out of the shower. Make a deep side part in your hair, and pull it into a low bun or ponytail, whichever you prefer. After applying moisturizer to your face, lightly tap on concealer wherever needed, swirl a craeme blush in a peachy shade close to your skin color on to your cheeks and add a light swipe of mascara on the top lashes. This is just enough to make you look alive and awake for class, but it takes only a minute.
To transform your Stella McCartney-inspired look to Missoni, you only need to add lipstick and undo the part in your hair. The look at the Missoni show was all about lips in a deep burgundy shade. The best way to wear dark lip colors is to prime your lips. While I mentioned applying lip balm prior to lipstick in the case of the 3.1 Phillip Lim show, you might also want to wet a washcloth or use a sugar scrub to ensure your lips are as smooth as possible for the Missoni look.
Then, once your lips are coated with balm, you could even use a flesh-toned lip liner to ensure the lipstick doesn't slide outside the lines of your lips. After applying the lipstick, fluff out your hair and secure it back in a ponytail, leaving the top a little bumpy and disheveled. This Italian company's classic knits scream effortless elegance, so a bright pop in the lips is all you really need in order to look bellissima.
Another way to enhance the Stella McCartney look would be to play up the eyes, instead of the lips, as demonstrated on the Marc Jacobs runway. Tons of mascara applied to the top and bottom lashes gave a doe-eyed look. The lashes were a bit clumpy even, and if you prefer to leave the spider lashes on the runway, comb through your lashes with a tiny lash comb. Liquid liner could also be used on the top lash line to further dramatize the look. The models' hair was shown down and loose.
When changing your look from summer to fall, a lot of people forget about their beauty routines and continue to pile on the bronzer and glittery shadows. Those products can be worked into a fall look, but most of the 2010 fall runways were showing a light hand on base makeup. Whether you dare to go bare (or at least look bare), play up your eyes, lips or both like at 3.1 Phillip Lim, just remember that you can be inspired by the fashion shows, but only you know what works best on you. Therefore, have fun playing up your own unique look to go with your cozy fall wardrobe.
