Indie rock highlights Fall Concert Preview
The air is beginning to chill, finally losing that feeling of the surface of the sun or the underside of hell. I already have enough reading to make me forget that books used to be fun. So we all know what's happening: Fall is finally arriving! And even though summer usually takes the credit for the most-packed concert season, the Boston area has a wide range of exciting shows to look forward to in the coming months. Such a wide range, actually, that savvy concertgoers must pick and choose which performances to see, saving their time and money for those that really deserve it.My first picks for fall are shows by bands who rarely tour. For example, Belle and Sebastian are coming to the Wang Theater in Boston on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Glasgow-based indie-folk band is touring for the first time in four years and is planning to release a new album, Belle and Sebastian Write About Love, on Tuesday, Oct. 12. So, a ticket means the chance to see Stuart Murdoch and the gang play more than just those songs from Juno. Who knows when they'll be back again?
Sufjan Stevens is also coming to town just after dropping his new album. The Age of Adz should be released in October, and if it's anything like the All Delighted People EP from August, his new material should be on par with his past work. All Delighted People is classic Sufjan, featuring crazy lyrics and a vast conglomeration of instruments and sound effects: weird and quirky, but totally listenable. Tickets are already sold out for Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Orpheum Theater, but seats still remain for Friday, Nov. 12.
Another highly recommended concert is the Avett Brothers, playing at the House of Blues on Thursday, Oct. 14. Before you write the band off as too twangy or country, bear in mind that the Avett Brothers are amazing live-if you can watch Seth Avett perform "My Last Song to Jenny" without tears in your eyes, then there is no doubt that you are a robot, or lack a soul at the very least.
If you are a robot and thus are trying to stay more local-namely you don't feel like moving off of the Brandeis campus-there are still plenty of musical performances to see: Sleigh Bells this Saturday at Cholmondeley's, Wavves on Sunday, and the Student Events Fall Concert on Oct. 2. Sleigh Bells is a Brooklyn-based electronic noise-pop duo signed to M.I.A.'s record label. The pair's biggest single is "Tell 'Em," a surprisingly primitive, raw track given the fact that electronic elements compose most of the tune. Wavves, on the other hand, perform a different take on noise-pop, featuring a more vocally driven, surf-influenced sound. They are currently opening for Phoenix's tour, while Sleigh Bells will be playing the Orpheum Theater along with LCD Soundsystem on Tuesday, Sept. 28. These prime opening slots and the blog buzz surrounding these two bands suggest that they are both quickly gaining notoriety. Thus, the chance to see them perform for free in such an intimate setting is promising; wouldn't you like to be able to tell people you saw them before they were big? OK Go, the Fall Concert artist, will perform the in Gosman Sports and Convocation Center with The Postelles on Oct. 2.
So, Brandeis, go enjoy some live music this season!
