Britney Spears video cancelled due to debate
Britney Spears' video for her next single "Everytime" has been completely changed after controversy erupted over its apparent suicide plot. Spears described, in a news brief on MTV.com, how her character in the video would drink wine, shows an open bottle of pills and an overflowing bathtub, only to eventually slip under the water in a somewhat metaphorical reference to suicide.MTV.com went crazy soon after this annoucement with letters from fans and foes alike, criticizing the pop tart for her plan. "I know it's a video, but I still hope parents sit down with their kids and explain to them that it's not OK to kill yourself or your boyfriend," said Amanda, 18, from Ohio in MTV's You Tell Us section. Fay, 24, from California also chimed in with, " Leave it to Britney to exploit suicide and try for a pathetic attempt at credibility. I lost a brother to suicide and am disgusted with her."
As pressure from her fans mounted, Spears and her camp made the decision to change the video, pulling the suicide plot entirely. Many fans criticized that move as well, challenging the star's artistic integrity. It seems in many ways that Ms. Spears is in a lose-lose situation with this video. Either she's insensitive to the issue of suicide, or she's simply her audience's pawn. After a video in which she kills her boyfriend ("Toxic"), however, one does begin to wonder what has made Britney so sad to be killing so many people so quickly.
