Coffeehouse put on trial
The mock trial coffeehouse on Wednesday night at Cholmondley's was a complete success. The team raised three times their goal for the night and had many wonderful acts. To advertise their team, the mock trial team members were on stage performing different activities that normally take place at their meetings. One of the skits involved two people questioning a witness who had committed an unknown crime. Their goal was to ask questions that would give them clues so that they could guess the crime. It was a good demonstration of what the mock trial does.
After some lag time between acts In Sync, the all female a cappella group took the stage. Consisting of Kelly Reed '04, Meredith Bodgas '04, Sarah Black '05, Sarah Beckwith '05, Lindsay Pfeffer '06, Mira Elias '06, Sabina Satpathi '06, Jessica Perelle '07, Caroline Vangrieken '07, Sara Kahan '07 and Megan Bisceglia '07, In Sync started off their set with the Beatles' "You Won't See Me," featuring soloist Perelle. While the opening was nothing spectacular, it was still nice to listen to. Their second song was "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye. This solo was definitely the standout performance of the group. Reed's voice was sensual and soulful, capturing Gaye's style. Pfeffer sang "Crash and Burn" by Savage Garden, and while her voice was very smooth and easy to listen, it was too soft. At one point in the song, the other group members raised their voices and completely drowned her out. Her distance from the microphone might have contributed to the lack of projection in her performance. The last song was "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox. The soloist had a very strong voice and brought In Sync's set to a satisfying close. Overall, it was a nice preview for their upcoming show on Saturday (see review on page 20).
The headliner of the evening was Boris' Kitchen, a sketch comedy group on campus with members Jeremy Toren '05, Dave Firestein '05, Sarah Pelrin '05, Carol Ortenberg '06, Joshua Louis Simon '07, Rachel Hillman '07, David Uslan '07, Rachel Boyarsky '06, Weldon Kennedy '06, Abby Orenstein '06, Elliot Veloso '05, Leah Hagler '05, Becky Allen '05, Nicole Frisch '04 and Jason Kushner '04. There are also three technical directors for the group, Sam Hariton '05, Rachel Shapiro '05 and Shanna Hollich '07. Boris' Kitchen performed four skits that were all very humorous. Their skits ranged from one in which a person who could only speak in cliches to one where someone gets infected with a disease in order to get a job researching it. The skits were very cleverly crafted and brought laughs from the entire crowd. Unlike at some other coffeehouses, Chum's was not filled to its normal capacity. Maybe it was due to the insane workload imposed upon students during this time of the semester. Whatever it was, it was not the fault of the performing groups, because they did a wonderful job entertaining the audience at Chum's.
