Soundtrack Of Our Lives rocks Lupo's
Ah, Sweden. Home of Swedish fish, and ... Well, okay, Sweden isn't known for too much. They just sit around above Europe and look cool most of the time. But in the past few years, the Swedes have begun their own musical invasion, launching The Hives, Sahara Hotnights, and finally The Soundtrack Of Our Lives deep into the music scene here in America. Soundtrack is comprised of six Swedish rockers who are ready to take America by storm. And they're doing it one club at a time.Lupo's in Providence is the perfect setting for a band like this. Somewhat spacious, but really industrial looked, made of brick walls painted with murals of music icons, Lupo's is an indie rocker's dream. And while the somewhat large club wasn't packed to the limit, it was filled with just enough people to give Soundtrack Of Our Lives the opportunity to play the intimate show they deserved.
The show I attended was part of their promotional tour for their newest album, "Behind The Music." The material played revolved largely around that album, which was both good and bad. It was good, because "Behind The Music" is a wonderful and consistently imaginative album, with more than enough awesome tunes to go around. Live renditions of "Sister Surround" and their closer "21st Century Rip Off" were definite highlights of the night. But Soundtrack's members have a long and wide musical background: they have played in many other bands and have been jamming together for years. The lack of older music seemed itself like a rip-off of sorts. After all, in order for a band to get good, they have to evolve, right? Part of the fun of a show is getting to hear music from all eras of the band's development, and that just wasn't happening that night.
Musical diversity or not, Soundtrack puts on an amazing show. All six members seemed bursting with energy the whole time: Guitarist Ian Person and keyboardist Martin Hederos were constantly playing off each other, shooting each other winks and jamming together on the same side of the stage. Bassist Ake Karl Kalle Gustafsson and guitarist Mattias Barjed shared a microphone and opportunities to play with the crowd, often climbing over the sound monitors, or sitting on them, to get closer to their fans.
Singer Ebbot Lundberg managed to get the entire crowd to move over to the opposite side of the room, just by motioning while he was walking over some speakers. Needless to say, the crowd followed eagerly. But let's not forget the drummer! Fredrik Sandsten received a whole lot of love, as his bandmates made sure that the crowd had all eyes on him for his many drum solos.
The show was tight, the music was on, and the crowd was loving it. Soundtrack Of Our Lives blasted through an hour of music, and then played a three song encore with all the giddiness of a small child. The night was well worth the drive down to Providence, and Sweden's never sounded so good.
