Symposium highlights protests in Brazil

The Brandeis International Business School sponsored an event titled "Global Protests, Local Realities: Understanding the Massive Brazilian Street Protests of 2013" last Tuesday. Four panelists contributed different perspectives to the issue of recent protests in Brazil.


Scholars examine Russian policies

Last Tuesday, journalist and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer activist Masha Gessen and professor of history at Smith College Sergey Glebov discussed discrimination in Russia at a panel discussion titled "Exploring Xenophobia and Intolerance: Spotlight on Russia," an event sponsored by the Brandeis-Genesis Institute for Russian Jewry. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation at Brandeis sponsored a panel discussion titled "People in Revolution" on Thursday, which offered a multidisciplinary approach to revolutions. The event was a part of the John E.


Panel focuses on religion and sexuality

On Friday, Hillel at Brandeis, Triskelion, Shalem, the Brandeis Orthodox Organization and Kehilat Sha'ar sponsored the event "Jewish and LGBT: Understanding the Dual Identity." Panelists Rabbi Steven Greenberg, Sara Fried '15, and students Gidon Feen from the George Washington University and Ami Altzman from Columbia University spoke about identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer and Jewish. Greenberg, the first openly gay orthodox rabbi, spoke about the difficulties many gay orthodox Jews face and the lack of acceptance in many orthodox communities.


Educator lectures on bigger picture of Israel conflict

Last Tuesday, Hillel, the Brandeis Zionist Alliance and the Brandeis Israel Public Affairs Committee co-sponsored an event titled "Israel 101: Understanding the Middle East with Iftah Burman," which aimed to provide an informed historical perspective of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During the event, Burman, founder of the Middle East Learning Academy, explained the history of Israel from 1917 to today. Burman chronologically described events, including various wars and attempts at peace, from the point of view of Palestinians, Israelis and members of neighboring Arab countries. Burman said his intent was to be as neutral as possible because the story of the Middle East is consistently told from biased perspectives.


Scholar examines intermarriage

On Tuesday, the Women's Studies Research Center sponsored an event titled "Intermarriage: How to Make a Family From Strangers," a lecture about the growing trend of intermarriage in this country.
