Students stage responses

Members of the Brandeis Zionist Alliance as well as a group of unassociated students staged responses to last week's Israeli Occupation Awareness Week, which was co-sponsored by Brandeis Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace.Demonstrations held in response to the Israeli Occupation Awareness Week sponsored by BZA included signs around campus that read "We Support Israel;" Piece of Cake for Peace, at which students handed out pieces of cake with blue and white frosting and a piece of paper with a fact about Israel on the plate; and a bar night at Joe Sent Me in Waltham, where shot glasses reading "Israel Gives Peace a Shot" were given out.Publicity Coordinator for BZA Tamar Schneck '12 said in an interview with the Justice that the protest events sponsored by BZA were created to "promote a positive image of Israel" instead of countering the Israeli Occupation Awareness Week events.Additionally, members of BZA distributed pro-Israel pamphlets at the events held during Israeli Occupation Awareness Week."[Planners of the Israeli Occupation Awareness Week] brought in a few speakers that we fundamentally disagreed with," Schneck said.


2011 Thomas Hunt Morgan medal awarded to University science professor

According to a BrandeisNOW press release issued yesterday, Prof. James Haber (BIOL), the director of the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center, has been named the 2011 recipient of the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal for lifetime contributions in the field of genetics offered by the Genetics Society of America.The Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal was established in 1981 to honor Thomas Hunt Morgan, a geneticist whose research provided the first experimental evidence that chromosomes carry genetic information, according to the GSA website.


Committee to study alcohol misuse

University President Jehuda Reinharz announced the formation of an ad-hoc Alcohol and Drug Policy Committee in an e-mail sent to the Brandeis community last night.The committee will "examine alcohol and drug use and misuse at Brandeis and recommend policies to ensure the health and safety of our students and the entire university community," Reinharz wrote in the e-mail.This news comes 2 weeks after Pachanga, at which according to an Oct.


Friday boiler malfunction repaired overnight

On Oct. 23, Senior Vice President of the Administration Mark Collins issued a campuswide e-mail explaining that a main boiler that provides several campus buildings with heat and hot water had malfunctioned at approximately 11 p.m.


Castle students report thefts

According to an interview with Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan, five students filed reports of theft in Usen Castle towers B and C early Sunday morning, and a possible suspect has been described as a male, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds who was wearing a dark knit cap and a grey hooded sweatshirt.In a phone interview with the Justice, Callahan explained that the thefts took place between 3 and 8 a.m.


Two administrators to assume Jean Eddy's responsibilities

According to a Sept. 14 e-mail to the Brandeis community, Vice President for Enrollment Keenyn McFarlane and Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer will provide joint oversight of the offices that compose the Division of Students and Enrollment after the current Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy resigns at the end of the month.Eddy has accepted the job of senior vice president for Students and Enrollment at the Rhode Island School of Design.
