Pickering to speak at commencement

Former United Nations ambassador Thomas R. Pickering will be the 2015 Commencement keynote speaker, according to a press release issued by the University on Monday.  The honorary degree recipients will be ballerina and founder of the Suzanne Farrell Ballet Suzanne Farrell, writer Jamaica Kincaid, chef and restauranteur Yotam Ottolenghi and poet and literary critic Helen Vendler. Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Bill Schaller wrote in the press release that “In honoring Ambassador Pickering...Brandeis highlights the value of working together for the betterment of mankind.” This is the first time since at least 1972 that more honorary degree recipients have been women than men, according to a March 10, 2014 letter from the Women’s and Gender Studies program.


Bemis resigns as the VP for Human Resources

Scot Bemis has resigned as the University’s vice president for Human Resources. He will be starting a new position as chief human resources officer at Dartmouth College on April 27, according to Dartmouth’s website.

Prof. Anita Hill cancels upcoming talks at the University of Illinois

On Sunday, Prof. Anita Hill (Heller) published an article in the Huffington Post stating that she will not be lecturing at the University of Illinois this semester after the escalation of an incident involving the school’s policy toward free speech. According to the article, Hill had agreed nearly a year ago to give two talks this spring at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign—a Chancellor’s Lecture and a keynote address to the Women Faculty of Color in the Academy Conference.
