In the wake of the coronavirus, there is a void in the world of sports without college and professional athletics. For many who took the availability of live-broadcasted sports for granted, this can be a trying time. However, what has not stopped is scientific research, including some important research surrounding the impact of sports-related head injuries.
On Feb. 29 and March 1, the Brandeis Track and Field teams participated in the University Athletic Association championships hosted by New York University at The Armory in New York City, NY. During the first day of the competition, the Judges had two All-Association performances, one for each the men and women. The Judges had one All-Association event each for the men and the women. On the men's side, it was Jack Allen ’20, who placed third and earned individual honors in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 6.90 meters. This was Allen’s first All-UAA honor indoors. On the women's side, the women’s distance medley team of Andrea Bolduc ’21, Sydney D’Amaddio ’23, Victoria Morrongiello ’23 and Niamh Kenney ’21 finished with a time of 12:08.92, nearly two seconds faster than Carnegie Mellon in third. This is the third straight year that the Judges finished in the top two, having won in each of the past two seasons.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Brandeis Judges participated in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference tournament held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The NEIFC is a league focused on supporting and developing intercollegiate fencing programs in and around New England. NEIFC hosts two tournaments each season. The first is the Fall Invitational usually held the first Saturday in November, and the Championship is usually held in late February.
If New York Mets fans are indeed envious of their neighbors who root for the New York Yankees, it is understandable. The Yankees have won 27 championships in the team’s 106 years (approximately one championship every four years) while the Mets have won two championships in their 57 years of existence (approximately one championship every 30 years).
Brandeis’ Jack Allan ’20 in the 60-meter hurdles and the women’s 4x200-meter relay teams both broke Brandeis school records in their events at the Tufts University 2020 Cupid Invitational on Feb. 8 in Medford, MA.
Super Bowl LIV was a contest between two powerful teams: the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes versus the San Francisco 49ers with their devastating defense, led by Rookie of the Year defensive end Nick Bosa. However, the contrast between the respective head coaches is also striking and, for many fans, seeing Andy Reid, the veteran and highly regarded head coach of the Chiefs, win his first Super Bowl was very gratifying. Here is a history of these two successful head coaches.
On Feb. 1, the Brandeis Judges hosted the Eric Sollee Invitational at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center. The women’s and men’s teams posted a 7–5 combined record with the women going 4–2 with and the men 3–3.
Released on Nov. 22, 2019, the long awaited sequel “Frozen 2” sent a chill down its viewers’ spines. With a score of 76% on RottenTomatoes, this film seemed to nicely wrap up some questions viewers were left wondering six years ago when the original film was released. The film seems to break Disney’s trend of poor sequels due to its overwhelming popularity following its release. This sequel has so far earned a record -breaking $123.7 million on Thanksgiving weekend and won the domestic box office for two weekends in a row.
The Brandeis University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped their Senior Day meet with a pair of wins on Jan. 18 at Wheaton College. The competition was held at Wheaton College because Brandeis’ Linsey Pool is undergoing renovations. The men’s team won 181–109 over the Keene State Owls and 178–96 over the Bridgewater State University Bears. The women were also victorious, with a sweep of 183–88 over Keene State and 195–82 over Bridgewater State. Overall, the Judges won 21 of the 32 events that took place that day.
The Brandeis Ballet Club performed its fourth annual production of The Nutcracker last Saturday and Sunday in the Carl J. Shapiro Campus Center Theater.
Day one of the Gompei Invitational, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was a tough day for the Judges, as they were up against some stiff competition. Of the competing teams, some of the real challengers were Bryant College, Merrimack College Women and Bentley University/St. Rose College. Through the first day of events, the Brandeis combined Swimming and Diving team found themselves in 10th place with a total of 555.5 points.
Timothy (Tim) Frank Morehouse ’00 is a Brandeis alum and the Olympic athlete to graduate from Brandeis University. Morehouse was a silver medalist on the United States fencing team, competing in the men’s sabre division at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, and also a member of the 2004 and 2012 Olympic teams. In addition, he was a two-time individual United States National Champion in 2010 and 2011. A native of the Bronx in New York City, Morehouse decided to take up the sport of fencing in order to get excused from gym class at Riverdale High School. In addition to being captain of the fencing team, he was a four-year member of the Riverdale Country School’s baseball team and a one-year member of the cross-country team.
The Brandeis Rowing Team was established in 1986 and is based out of Stoller Boathouse in Newton, MA. The team shares the boathouse with Lasell College and Community Rowing Inc. This year’s captains are Viking Mayor ’20 and Ethan Miller ’22, and the coaches are team member Alex Gavriel and former Justice Editor in Chief Abby Patkin ’18. The team is committed to upholding the academic integrity of Brandeis while striving to achieve success in the competitive world of collegiate rowing. The Brandeis team competes as a co-ed organization in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Club Sports.
The Brandeis Krav Maga Club is a student-run club that teaches self-defense using realistic training and real-world scenarios in order to make students accustomed to the stresses of situations where self-defense is necessary. Krav Maga is a military self-defense and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces and Israeli security forces. Students are taught verbal and physical methods to avoid potential threats, in addition to defensive and offensive maneuvers in cases when avoidance fails. It is a combination of boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo and karate along with realistic fight training. According to the Krav Maga Boston Club ,“The principles of Krav Maga are simple: 1) Address an immediate danger, 2) Attack simultaneously, 3) Eliminate the threat, 4) Disengage.”
The Brandeis Women’s Rugby Team is a student-run club where the team trains college rugby players, many of whom graduate and move on to continue their rugby careers at the senior level. There is no experience required or expected to join rugby, and in fact, most new members of the team have never played or seen a rugby game. This year’s captains are Diana Epstein ’22 and Sarah Pechet ’21.
In last week’s issue, I reviewed two of the top professional sports rivalries, as judged by thetoptens.com, consisting of the great New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox baseball rivalry and the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics basketball rivalry were. This week, the volatile Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers football rivalry and the Montreal Canadiens-Toronto Maple Leafs hockey rivalry will be explored.
By the time this article comes out in the Justice, the New York Jets and New York Giants will have played their football game for “bragging rights” in the New York area. Despite both of their dismal records, this is a meaningful rivalry for devoted fans of each team. For sports fans, it is fun to ponder what are the greatest rivalries in professional sports. According to thetoptens.com, the top four rivalries comprise Yankees-Red Sox, Celtics-Lakers, Bears-Packers and Canadiens-Maple Leafs.
An adage in sports, attributed to legendary basketball coach, Adolph Rupp of the University of Kentucky says, “That’s why we play the game: to see who’ll win,” according to an article from grammarphobia.com reminds us that in sports, we should not be surprised by results contrary to our expectations. With that in mind, at the midpoint of the 2019 National Football League season, I present the teams that have surprised us, based on the pre-season predictions by John Breech, according to a September 2019 article by CBS Sports.
This week, the Brandeis Judges’ volleyball team suffered two match losses. Their opponent on Oct. 31 was the Wellesley College Blue, and they handed the Judges three set losses in a row with scores of 11–25, 16–25 and 19–25. However, on Nov. 2, the Judges put up a great fight against the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons before losing in the fifth and deciding match. Existing Judges injuries to several players on the team left the Judges with little depth, and the team began to tire in the last two sets. The Beacons won with set scores of 25–20, 18–25, 21–25, 25–15 and 15–8.
On Nov. 2, the Brandeis men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the University Athletic Association championships hosted by Carnegie Mellon University at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, PA. Niamh Kenney ’21 led the women’s team to a seventh-place overall finish, and for a second year in a row, Josh Lombardo ’21 led the men’s team as they finished ninth overall in the meet.
