Brandeis T&F kicks off 2024 with back-to-back wins

On Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, the Brandeis University Track and Field team showcased their talents in the 2024 Reggie Poyau Memorial Title by seizing a well-earned victory. In their first and only home meet of the season, the women finished with 129.5 points, with 28 more points than second-place, Bates College, causing the Judges to take home the title. The men finished with 80 points, placing third, behind the notable track and field teams from Bates College, with 206 points, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) University, with 174 points.

Judges secure wins in competition over the weekend

In the first game of the UAA Challenge on Friday, Dec. 1, Brandeis Men’s Basketball claimed a 68-58 victory over Bates College. Right from the tip-off, the Judges asserted dominance, surging ahead with an impressive seven-point streak, fortifying their lead and dictating the game's pace. Bates attempted to narrow the gap with consecutive three pointers, but Brandeis, guided by Coach Jean Bain, responded swiftly, extending their advantage with a seven point surge of their own.


Boston Welcomes the Return of Women's Soccer with New NWSL Franchise

When the National Women's Soccer League declared it would be expanding, it didn't take long for an all woman led ownership group to take action. In an exciting development for soccer enthusiasts in Boston, it was the Boston Unity Soccer Partners who were awarded the expansion team. This franchise, set to kick off in 2026, aims to bring back professional women's soccer to the city after the dissolution of the Boston Breakers in 2018.

CJ Stroud off to phenomenal start in professional career

The “rookie” —  a term used to describe a professional in their first year — can be accurately applied to many young athletes coming out of college hoping to have a long career. For the Houston Texans rookie quarterback, CJ Stroud, a more appropriate term would be “MVP” with how he has been lighting up the NFL in the early start of his career.



Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Tournament

On Friday, Nov. 10, Brandeis Women’s Basketball kicked off the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness tournament with a decisive 61-38 victory over Wellesley College. Brandeis hosted Oberlin College, Kean University, and Wellesley College in a four-game invitational tournament. The excitement in the air from players was accompanied by tabling from several student-athlete organizations.

First International Referee in the NBA is announced

On Oct. 24, the National Basketball Association released its Official Guide for the 2023-2024 season. Among the 82 officials listed, one man stands out in particular: Hwang In-Tae. This would be Hwang’s first ever season as an NBA referee. But this personal milestone is something much greater. This season would be the first time the NBA had a referee from outside of America.

Texas Rangers make history and bring home their first World Series

This week was a spooky one for most, but perhaps no one more so than for the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, the Texas Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks 5-0 to cap off a 4-1 series win, clinching the franchise’s first-ever World Series title. They made league history as well, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason history to go perfect on the road, winning all 11 games on their travels. This came despite going under .500 (with a record of 40-41) in away games this season.


Japanese baseball: a pipeline of pitchers for the MLB

Since Hideo Nomo came over to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995, there has been a steady pipeline between the Nippon Professional Baseball League, Japan’s highest level of baseball, and Major League Baseball. Almost every year since 1995, NPB players have exercised their foreign free agency rights or have been posted by their teams in Japan in order to play in the pinnacle of baseball in the MLB, and this year is no exception. 


Miguel Cabrera hangs up his cleats after a successful career

On Oct. 1, the Detroit Tigers faced off against the Cleveland Guardians in their final regular season game. But this was no ordinary game — there was a drone show, a stadium card stunt, a tribute video, a special ceremony, and fans holding posters to honor one person in particular: Miguel Cabrera. This was the last game of Cabrera’s farewell season after announcing his retirement earlier in February. Cabrera had spent the last 15 of his 21 years in the MLB with the Tigers.   


International marathon records are shattered

On Oct. 8, 2023, Kelvin Kiptum, a 23-year-old from Kenya, became the first person to run a marathon in under 2 hours and one minute. His time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon earlier this fall makes him the fastest male marathon runner in the world, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge, who ran a 2:01:09 in Berlin last year. 


Spotlight on Athletes Without Borders group

On Oct. 18, the University Athletes without Borders group held its first meeting to provide a space for international student-athletes to voice their concerns, hold events, and share their cultures. Co-founders Anastasia Sia ’25 and Sancho Moroto Tobias ’24 are looking to organize events about every three weeks to gather students with these shared identities.
