Branda, a mobile application created by Brandeis students for the University community, launched on Thursday. According to the Branda website, it is a “two-sided platform” connecting Brandeis students with essential campus services.
The Seattle Mariners and New York Mets have recently finalized a blockbuster trade, encompassing the two very different tracks each team is on. The Mets believe they still have an opportunity to win now, whereas the Mariners are cutting costs and focusing on the future. The Mets division, the National League East, is proving to be one of the most exciting and rapidly improving league in baseball, with all teams, besides for the Marlins, looking to compete for top spot. This trade will dramatically change the look of the Mets roster, with Robinson Cano taking over second base and being placed in the middle of the lineup, and Edwin Diaz becoming the everyday closer. Recently, the Philadelphia Phillies have traded for shortstop Jean Segura, and the Nationals have signed starting pitcher Patrick Corbin to counter the Mets’ activities. The Mets general manager has made it clear that there will be more moves on the horizon, saying, “We did not make this move to have this be the last move... We want to bolster the team, improve our production next season and add more players around this.” To add to the competitive nature of the offseason moves for National League East, Fred Wilpon, owner of the Mets, admitted he made the trade for Diaz partially to block him from going to the rival, Phillies. This flurry of moves is good for the division and the sport as a whole, bringing excitement back to New York and other large markets.
The Brandeis men’s and women’s fencing teams hosted the annual meet on campus at the Brandeis Invitational. They picked up a combined two wins in ten matches among the stiff competition. Both victories belonged to the men’s team. They were victorious 17–10 in their match against Cornell and 16–11 in their game against Incarnate Word. The team lost to St John’s University 19–8.

Over the years, Brandeis players and coaches have gone on to, or come from, the world of professional sports. Many of those players and coaches were involved in basketball specifically. The Judges have had many great coaches over the years that have helped the team reach success in both the University Athletic Association and beyond, including three former Boston Celtics players who came to campus afterward to become coaches for the Judges.
As part of its commitment to funding medical research, the National Football League awarded Boston Children’s Hospital more than $14.6 million for concussion research, according to a Nov. 15 NFL News story. To date, the NFL has donated more than $35 million to fund brain health and injury research, per the same article.

The architect of the Americans with Disabilities Act, former Democratic Iowa senator Tom Harkin, discussed the importance of disability legislation on Wednesday as the featured speaker of the Lurie Institute for Disability Policy’s Annual Distinguished Lecture. Harkin’s lecture, titled “True Integration: Meaningful Work for People with Disabilities,” celebrated the expansion of rights for Americans with disabilities since the 1990 passage of the ADA, but criticized the lack of progress made in government policies to encourage economic self-sufficiency for citizens with disabilities.

After a dominant playoff run, the Boston Red Sox took home their first World Series win since 2013. This season, the team amassed 108 wins and was the top team of the stacked American League East division. Their sworn rivals, the New York Yankees, won 100 games this year, which ordinarily would have easily gotten them the division crown, but only earned them a wild card spot. This just goes to show how historic this year’s Sox squad was.

At the time of this article’s publishing, the college football regular season is now about halfway over. With seven weeks to go in the regular season, teams are gearing up for the home stretch, ready to make the last push and prove they deserve consideration for the top bowl games and FBS playoffs.
The Brandeis Librarians’ Union expressed frustration over their contract negotiations with the University in a campaign during Family Weekend. The BLU, which is connected to the Service Employees International Union Local 888, have been negotiating with the University administration since June 2018 to collectively bargain for fair contracts for Brandeis librarians, according to a flyer handed out by members of the Union. (University Librarian Matthew Sheehy, a representative for the University in the negotiations, clarified in an email to the Justice that Internet and Technology Services is not a part of this negotiation.)

This is a historic year for the Toxic Majorette Dance Line. Formed in 2015 under the umbrella of the Brandeis Black Student Organization, this year the team became an independent, University-chartered club. They celebrated this acheivement in Saturday’s enormous showcase “Pick your Poison,” demonstrating not only their skills but also those of a variety of other dance and music groups.
