The Brandeis baseball team inched even closer to a 0.500 overall win-loss record after earning three solid victories this week. The Judges are now 12–13 for the season and gaining momentum as they head into the final 13 games of this season. Among the final set of games, eight will be against University Athletic Conference foes New York University and Case Western Reserve University, when the Judges will have a great opportunity to improve their conference record, currently 0–8.

This past Saturday, the Judges,along with six other colleges, traveledto western Massachusetts to take part in the Amherst Spring Fling. This week saw the continuation of underclassman dominating the rankings, with a few seniors and juniors placing here and there. Thewomen’s track and field team placed fifth overall with 30 points, justone point ahead of Mount Holyoke College, and the men’s team came in third with 54 points.

Last Thursday, faculty returned to defend last year’s win at the University’s annual students versus faculty and staff basketball game called Hoops for Help, hosted by Brandeis Beacons. Although the faculty team fell short this year, the event still raised money for a variety of causes.

Unfortunately, this weekend resulted in another sweep at the hands of a University Athletic Association opponent, as Washington University in Saint Louis came to Waltham and won all four matchups with the Judges. Following a long season in the world of college basketball, and the famous March Maddness the final four teams have been narrowed down from a total of 68 that originally began play, as explained by Cbs Sports. The final four teams include the University of Virginia, Michigan State University, Texas Tech University and Auburn University. All of these teams are looking to be the 2019 NCAA National Champions. So far this season, Texas Tech has the largest margin of victory, with an average of 15 points.

This week, the Brandeis University Judges went head to head with the Bobcats of New York University. The Judges swept all four games, bringing them to an overall record of 15–0–1. The team continues to have a strong season even following the game against Wellesley University that resulted in a 7–7 tie. The Judges are now 4–0 in the conference have no plans of slowing down now explained by the Brandeis Athletics site.

It’s that time of year again! The most exciting time in sports! The NBA playoffs are coming. The playoff race is tight as ever in both conferences for the first time in a long time: the East, where one game separates the sixth and ninth spots, and the West, where there is a four and a half game difference between the third seed and the eighth seed. After last night’s blowout victory, the Los Angeles Lakers crushed the Charlotte Hornets’ hope of making the playoffs this season, barring a catastrophic implosion by any of the four teams ahead of them. The East is probably having their most exciting playoff race in a long time, with the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic and Miami Heat all fighting to finish with the sixth seed and avoid being swept by the Milwaukee Bucks or Toronto Raptors. The West’s playoff race is already locked in with the Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder all having clinched their breaths in the postseason.

On Monday, the team lost a tight game at Springfield College, but on Tuesday they made up for it with a historic win against usual foe, Amherst College. Baseball legend and Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki formally retired after a 27-year professional baseball career, following the Mariner’s win over the Oakland Athletics in a game played Thursday at the Tokyo Dome in his native Japan, as stated by Mike Chiari in the Bleacher Report.

The Brandeis men’s ultimate frisbee team — known commonly around campus as TRON — has two primary goals. The first is to be a close-knit and fun escape that promotes a team atmosphere. The second goal is to have a competitive and intense environment for those who desire it. This team advertises that it welcomes all skill levels allowing improvement in technique. “A-side” team members go on a trip to Virginia Beach,where the team participates in the Oak Street Challenge tournament, practices, reviews footage of plays and just hangs out together. All in all, the team hopes to become competitive enough to compete at a national level.

The Brandeis baseball team has continued their impressive season which started on March 4th. This week, the Judges defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology twice with scores of 13-1 and 15-2. This double header occurred at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough. These wins bring the team to a winning streak of three games in a row and a record of 7–2 overall. Currently the team has a batting average of 0.380, an on- base percentage of 0.457, a slugging percentage of 0.643 and has played in nine games.

The women’s tennis team is now 4–4 for the season. Following recent wins against California Institute of Technology, Redlands Community College, Bates College and Colby College; and losses against Bryant University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIddlebury College, the ladies have yet to face any University Athletic Association opponents. Their first UAA matchup will be against New York University on April 6, but for now, their next opponent is Wheaton College on Saturday.

Despite the enormous amount of hype after signing with Los Angeles, LeBron James has proven he is not the key to success the Lakers had hoped for. Coming into this season, the prevailing thought was that LeBron would be capable of leading the young, untested Laker squad from the cellar of the Western Conference to the playoff mix. However, those lofty goals have not come to fruition with Laker nation’s optimism quickly shifting to hopes for next year as their postseason aspirations have all but been squashed. The team’s performance this season has led to questions about Lebron’s positive effect, or lack thereof, on the team and how they should proceed moving forward.

Ancient history may have taught us to beware the ides of March, but more modern times point to an important and pivotal time in the third month of the calendar year — selection Sunday. Since November, the college basketball season has been raging on. Teams from around the country competed against each other both in and out of conference play. In the end, 68 teams were granted the honor of participating in the NCAA Division I college basketball tournament, better known as March Madness. Here is how the bracket breaks down this year.

To anyone who watches sports highlights on television, it is apparent that many professional athletes have clever nicknames. These nicknames are often a manifestation of some personal characteristic of the player, are catchy and add a personal insight into the player. A compilation of what are considered the top 100 nicknames in professional sports is readily available in a July 2011 Bleacher Report article. I reviewed this list and came up with my top five. My personal ranking is based not on the skill and prestige of the player, but rather on the humor and wit of the nickname.
