David Duchovny of X-Files and Californication fame has reportedly entered rehab for sex addiction. Now, there's a lot of talk about the sexual appetite that Duchovny and his character on Californication share, prompting many to wonder whether his performance is a case of method acting or type casting, but there is one factor that many seem to overlook: It's Hollywood. David Duchovny, not exactly an A-lister but definitely an actor with some credibility-and a mighty good-looking one if you ask me-has plenty of options on his plate. I can only imagine the L.A. nobodies who try to pass themselves off as the quasi-David Duchovny type and who manage to score off that alone, so I need no stretch of the imagination to see Duchovny delivering the same routine with half as much effort and getting double the results.
This is the part that confuses me: Duchovny has been supposedly happily married to actress Tea Leoni (known for her roles in A League of Their Own and Bad Boys) for over 10 years. The couple has two children. His sexual addiction is a matter that has been speculated about for years-does that mean his marriage is and has been in shambles? No one seems to be covering those details. Sex addicts are usually the kind that stray from the warmth of home; isn't that usually the mark of a problem? I can't say that this bit of news has stirred much interest in me.
I just find it amusing that Duchovny's "problem" is what's making the headlines rather than the obvious conflict it presents for his home life. I can't tell if avoiding his family is an honorable and deliberate step the tabloids are making or if it's just a huge oversight. Actually, on second thought, it has to be oversight. No tabloid would deliberately pass up the chance to exploit a falling star's family members for maximum drama.
In these situations, I'm not sure if I should wish him all the best or continue to talk about the jaded Hollywood male. I just don't know. I'm not much of an expert on sexual addicts or the Hollywood lifestyle. Nothing like ending with a disclaimer.
