Aramark to hold blind taste test
(CORRECTION APPENDED, SEE BELOW)As part of a larger campaign to increase healthy food options in dining halls, Aramark is planning to sponsor a taste test of pastries baked with a new trans-fat free shortening.
On Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m., students will have the opportunity to participate in a blind taste test in The Boulevard featuring two versions of the packaged chocolate chip cookies sold daily on campus.
One sample will have the usual shortening, and one will have the new, trans-fat free shortening, according to Campus Nutritionist Laura O'Gara.
After students try the cookies they will be asked to vote on which tasted better.
It is unclear whether Aramark would use the shortening if the trans-fat laden cookies are the preference.
O'Gara said that Prof K.C. Hayes (BIO), who invented SmartBalance spread, would be invited to the event, but added that the shortening used in the taste test was not his invention.
