Attire Authority: Staying classy in springtime
In the middle of a month that came in like a thousand lions, I can't wait to see the lamb's wool, terrycloth, yachts, flip-flops, madras and other preppy things I love come out of hiding soon. It is always fun to dress as if the weather were a little bit nicer than it is outside. That said, don't overdo it, because you could be labeled foolish, easy or (far worse) someone who doesn't know how to dress for the season. In addition, you could always catch a cold, the consequences of which include several nights at home deprived of the ability to show off great outfits. But that sounds shallow.
In terms of footwear, flip-flops are technically the new loafers, but on colder days, wearing loafers or driving moccasins without socks makes a bold but comfortable springtime statement. When you wear flip-flops, match them with other subtle accessories: black flip-flops with a black and white belt or green flip-flops with an emerald necklace or bracelet. Otherwise, as long as you avoid polar bear fur-covered snow boots, you should be in good shape.
Bathing suits can be quite a stressful issue for young people trying to look good on the beach. For men, I can offer this simple advice: don't wear a Speedo bottom unless you can convince people that you are from Europe and have a perfect body to match. Don't wear board shorts if you are under 5'8" tall, and the overarching rule: choose something tasteful and flattering.
For women, however, no hard and fast rules exist about bathing suits. The two best suggestions I have are: 1.) bring a friend with you to shop for one; he or she will have perspective on your body's angles that are not easily visible in a mirror, and 2.) Consider swimsuits with built-in support, but try everything on first. One hard and fast rule for everyone is to wear sunscreen! No matter how perfect your swimsuit is, you won't want to leave the house if you're red and peeling.
Now, that's wonderful advice (if I do say so myself) for traditional springtime attire, but what about all you trendy readers? Well, women, you're in luck, because this spring season will be one of the best and easiest in the last decade. The most important element this spring is color, and the color of choice is white. Whether it's lace dresses or crocheted cardigans, oversized handbags or crop pants, white is reflective of the elegance and courage of trendy dressers!
Another lovable trend is the return of very flattering and stylishly humble neutral tones such as brown, peach, tan, beige and khaki (and NO, they are not all the same color). But my favorite spring trend is the return (after not so many years) of platform sandals-no, not the obnoxious seven-inch-high platforms, but subtle and tasteful slides, wedges and thongs.
For men, this season is the ultimate opportunity to dress well without severe damages to your pocketbook (but if you want to make those, they are easy enough to achieve). First, as a retreat from those heavy plastic-framed, ebony-enveloped sunglasses, this season prefers a lighter, wire-rimmed, charcoal grey version.
The true audacity and boldness designers have proven in their unique and vibrant men's blazers is one of the best aspects of this season. From tie-dyed, to distressed denim, to brocade, to camouflage, blazers this season mean anything other than that old prep school thing you have had in your closet since 8th grade.
As we approach the warmer months, just remember to be yourself, dress comfortably and have fun. As always, spring months are when we can show off our tans, bright colors and trendy insights.
