It is not necessary to venture to Boston for a romantic, elegant dinner. Although many of the most popular upscale spots are in the city, the suburbs have a few hidden gems of their own.

One is merely a 10-minute drive from Brandeis in the charming village of West Newton. lumiaere, a French bistro, resides quietly on Washington Street veiled by closed curtains and an unassuming sign.

Despite its modest look, patrons from all over come to dine here, and the restaurant is full nearly every night.

In February 1999, Michael Leviton, the former executive chef of Up Stairs at the Pudding, opened lumiaere with his wife. It was a welcome addition to West Newton and is conveniently located across the street from the town's renowned cinema, which regularly features rare, independent, artsy films.

Soon, shining reviews appeared in all of Boston's finest magazines, and awards were bestowed upon this remarkable eatery. A Boston Globe journalist wrote, "lumiaere is a most captivating restaurant, engaging all the senses from the moment one pushes the spoon-shaped handles on the front door to tasting the first dish." (www.lumiaere-restaurant.com).

The decor of lumiaere is simple and refined, with white and ivory as the main color scheme. Small in size with a capacity of only 65 people, one feels warm and cozy in the surroundings.

The food at lumiaere far surpasses expectations and tastes quite fresh and utterly delectable. Beginning with an appetizer of "Duck Confit and Frisee Salad with Lentils, Cerignola Olives, and Mustard Vinaigrette," it was obvious that this dinner was going to be an exceptional treat. The entrees of "Wild Striped Bass with Mashed Potatoes, Mushrooms, Pearl Onions and Bacon, and Coq au Vin Sauce" and "Braised Niman Ranch Lamb Shoulder with White Beans, Roasted Tomatoes, Carrots, and Preserved Lemons and Nicoise Olives" melted in the mouth and had distinct flavors that stimulated the palate.

Even better than the appetizer and main dishes was the dessert of "Molten Valrhona Chocolate with Ginger Ice Cream and Irish Coffee Sauce," which was sinfully rich and too good. After a few bites, I had to stop because the dessert was so overwhelming. Besides the delectable taste, the presentation of each course was precise and done with care. The food was almost too attractive to eat ... almost.

lumiaere is definitely one of the best restaurants in the area. It is pricey, but for a special occasion, it is worthwhile to skip Boston and go closer to home for a superior meal. Reservations are needed, so don't procrastinate. Dinner at lumiaere and a movie at the nearby cinema are a perfect combination for a cold winter night.
