Finkelstein calls Israel a human rights abuser, following brief protest

Norman Finkelstein, the controversial DePaul University professor who says Israel capitalizes from the Holocaust, accused the country of abusing human rights and defended former President Jimmy Carter's recent book Tuesday in Rapaporte Treasure Hall.Finkelstein was the second Middle East speaker to appear at the University in two days, following the conservative Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes last Monday on the "Islamization of Europe." Both speakers have been the subject of much debate over the nature of campus dialogue about the Middle East, an issue that took center stage this semester after Carter's high-profile visit to campus in January.

Voldman, Williamson talk peace

Students have to pay for new HPV vaccine

CORRECTION APPENDED (SEE BELOW)Students who wish to receive a vaccine for the human papillomavirus from the Golding Health Center will have to pay for it, Kathleen Maloney, the center's administrator, said.Gardisil, the HPV vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration last July, is given in three doses totaling $375.

Donations not stalled even with Carter visit

Despite reports to the contrary, University President Jehuda Reinharz's recent fundraising attempts have not been stifled by controversy surrounding former President Jimmy Carter's visit, his executive assistant said.On his most recent trip, Reinharz raised "many millions of dollars," receiving positive receptions from both group and individual donors, said John Hose, Reinharz's assistant.Hose downplayed a report last month in The Jewish Week that quoted Stuart Eizenstat as saying, "There are evidently a fair number of donors who have indicated they will withhold contributions."Hose said that, since Carter's high-profile visit drew criticism from right-leaning Jewish leaders, there is "no change in the amount of donations of which I am aware." A statement the University released last month to The Jewish Advocate said: "It is too early to determine whether Jimmy Carter's appearance will have an impact on our fundraising efforts.One administrator had earlier expressed some concern over the complaints the University was receiving regarding Carter.

Advising office opens in Usdan

As part of a long-term plan to make Usdan a one-stop location for student services, the offices of Undergraduate Academic Affairs and Student Enrichment Services merged to become the Office of Academic Services, located on the second floor of Usdan.The two offices, formerly located in Kutz Hall, are now steps away from the Office of Residence Life, the Hiatt Career Center and Student Financial Services.Kim Godsoe, who assumed the newly created role of Dean of Academic Services after a nationwide search, said it is "wonderful" that the office is so close to other services such as the Hiatt Career Center.After a search that some faculty members felt was not transparent, a search committee headed by Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer chose Godsoe.Godsoe's former position as head of Enrichment Services and the position of head of Academic Affairs, held by Michele Rosenthal, were eliminated in the merge.Rosenthal and Godsoe were both candidates to become the new director of the merged office, and the position was eventually offered to the latter.In a campuswide e-mail, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy wrote, "During her eight years at the University, Michele has been tireless in her advocacy for students and the programs that support them."Eddy said Rosenthal is an academics consultant until the end of the academic year.Dean for the Junior and Senior Classes Wendy Russman-Halperin, who previously served under Rosenthal, expressed pleasure with the merger: "The two offices are together, so it makes it much easier to confer with each other.

WhoCash and dining points may go online

Students looking to easily monitor their balances of campus dining dollars may soon be able to do so from the comfort of their dorm rooms, according to Student Union officials.While concrete plans for the new service have yet to be developed, the officials said they hope to develop a Web site that would allow students to track dining points and meal plan allotments.
