Union argues for rights bill

The Student Union is currently involved in discussion with the administration about incorporating the Student Bill of Rights into the University's Rights and Responsibilities Handbook or have it recognized by the University as a separate document, according to Student Union Director of Community Development Ryan McElhaney '10."We want the University to recognize these as student rights, not just the Student Union," said Student Union Director of Communications Jamie Ansorge '09.


Union to distribute student rights information

The Student Union's Office of Student Rights and Advocacy plans to hand out 500 "Know Your Rights" magnets in an effort to increase campus awareness about student rights, as well as to provide information about where students can turn for guidance if they are required to go through the University's judicial process, according to Student Union President Jason Gray '10.According to Director of OSRA Laura Cohen '09, the magnets will be ordered in the next few days and will arrive within one to two weeks.


Residence life postpones gender-neutral housing

It is "very likely" that there will be some form of gender-neutral housing at Brandeis next fall, according to Residence Life's Associate Director for Operations and Assignments Jeremy Leiferman.Last March, former Director of Residence Life Rich DeCapua stated that the Department of Residence Life aimed to implement a gender-neutral housing policy, which would allow for mixed-gender rooms after the first two weeks of the fall semester, which would have started this past Monday Sept.


Helping hands

When Matt Kleiman '10 visited Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in New Orleans on the National College Volunteers trip in March, he was struck by the importance of preserving the city's natural beauty in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.


Film addresses Somalian refugees

The University hosted a series of documentaries about immigration as part of a program titled "America's Ambivalent Open Arms: A series of films and discussions about current US immigration realities" last week.All events were held in the Zinner Forum in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and were organized by Lila Starbuck '08.


STAND conference introduces new campaign

The Brandeis chapter of STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition drew approximately 200 attendees from high schools and colleges across New England as well as New York and New Jersey as a first-time host of STAND's annual Northeast Regional Conference last weekend.


Khaled Toameh urges Israeli integration

Arab-Israeli journalist Khaled Abu Toameh, a reporter for the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post, spoke last Tuesday about his experience covering the Arab-Israeli conflict, corruption within the Palestinian leadership and about the need for free media within the Palestinian territories.
