ANALYSIS: Announcement of Rose reopening stirs disputes

The April 17 announcement that the Rose Art Museum will reopen July 22 and will exhibit part of its permanent collection in order to allow the Committee on the Future of the Rose more time to deliberate was a turning point in the Rose debacle because it significantly elevated the doubt of many invested in the Rose story with regard to the committee and its lack of influence over the museum's artwork collection.Prior to the April 17 announcement, many were willing to wait for the Committee on the Future of the Rose's report.


University reacts to CARS proposals

In the aftermath of yesterday's release of the Curriculum and Academic Restructuring Steering committee's report, many faculty and students affected by the proposals immediately began to express initial reactions to the committee's recommendations.The committee's recommendations included making American Studies, Classical Studies and African and Afro-American Studies interdepartmental-programs instead of departments and implementing a 10-percent cut of faculty and staff across all departments, reducing the size of most Ph.D.


Interim title removed from current Jewish chaplain

Rabbi Elyse Winick '86, who has served as interim Jewish chaplain for more than a year, is now the "unconditional" Jewish chaplain of the University, according to a campuswide e-mail from Dean of Student Life Rick Sawyer yesterday.Winick "confirmed her unconditional status" as Jewish chaplain on campus and "accepted [the University's] offer to remove the interim condition from her appointment," Sawyer wrote.


Admin re-evaluating study abroad scholarship policy

The administration is re-evaluating the new policy that made merit-based scholarships nontransferable to study abroad programs, according to Dean of Financial Services Peter Giumette.The change was instituted by the Division of Students and Enrollment and announced in an e-mail sent out Jan.


Students demand to be more involved

Many students are demanding more transparency and more student involvement in decisions regarding the University's budget cuts and financial situation, especially after the University's recent proposals to create meta-majors, increase the student body by 12 percent, decrease the faculty by 10 percent and institute a required summer semester.Students were not allowed into last Thursday's emergency faculty meeting held to discuss this academic proposal.
