Rose Art Museum to undergo renovations

The Rose Art Museum will undergo major renovations beginning in early June to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the building and improve the environmental conditions within the museum, Vice President for Planning and Institutional Research Dan Feldman said in an interview with the Justice.The renovations are scheduled to take place through the last week of August in preparation for the museum's upcoming 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated in the fall, according to Feldman.Director of Museum Operations Roy Dawes explained that the Rose galleries will be closed from mid-April through late September, but the Lois Foster Wing galleries will remain open into June and will be accessible via the side door of the Foster wing.The total cost of the renovations is expected to be $1.7 million, Feldman clarified in a follow-up e-mail to the Justice.


Board of Trustees holds first meeting of academic year

Correction appendedAccording to Senior Representative to the Board of Trustees Heddy Ben-Atar '11, four issues that the Student Union is focusing on this year were presented to the Board of Trustees at last week's Board of Trustees meeting.The issues included improving social life on campus, students' reactions to the admissions policy changes that are being implemented for the Class of 2015, the importance of renovating the Linsey pool and potential dining changes.Ben-Atar said that it is important for students to have better social experiences on campus.


Skolnik will serve as the Village senator

After reviewing the Student Union Constitution's election policies, Student Union Secretary Herbie Rosen '12 decided last Tuesday to allow Missy Skolnik '12 to take the position of Village Senator even though she may not be able to serve for the entirety of her term.According to Article IX, section 1 of the Student Union Constitution, a student must be a registered Brandeis student for "the entire period in which s/he will hold office" in order to run for election.Skolnik was ineligible to run as an official candidate because she may study abroad next semester.


Booker advocates responsibility

Dr. Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, N.J., challenged members of the graduating class of 2009 to make a choice when he delivered the keynote address at Brandeis' 58th commencement ceremony last Sunday, asking, "Do you resign yourself to what is, or do you commit yourself to being a part of what can be, what should be, what must be?"Booker spoke to the members of the graduating class of 2009, which consisted of 783 undergraduates, 84 Ph.D.
