Advocacy committee pushes new initiatives

The student senate's advocacy committee is currently tackling a set of new initiatives to enhance the quality of student life.Initiatives include the extension of C-store hours, the construction of a road between the Massell Quad driveway and the three chapels to decrease walking distance, and supporting the interests of sports clubs, committee chair Ezra Stark '05 said. "We are extending hours to make it [the C-Store] more convenient for them," Stark said.


Rabbi of ill repute recruits for unsanctioned text study

Rabbi Marc Golub, a former mental health counselor and spiritual leader who had sex with a female client while working for a Virginia mental health treatment center from 1996 to 1997, appeared on campus last week and asked students to participate in an interfaith text study not sanctioned by Brandeis Hillel or any regional Jewish organization.

Brandeis students are ensuring that tsunami relief efforts aren't just left to the professionals.A month after the tsunami's initial impact in South Asia, students say they are making progress with their own aid projects.Hillel, the Intercultural Center, Waltham Group and BTV:65 held a fund-raiser several weeks ago that raised $217.Edgar Ndjatou '06, who planned the fundraiser with Jacob Kim '06, said the process is collaborative and ongoing, bringing in as many campus groups as possible."We contacted several organizations on campus and we had tables set up in the atrium and we had people donate and sign up," Ndjatou said.Kim, who is also part of a committee of graduate students, undergraduate students and Residence Life staff said that though the financial support of the community will ensure some degree of fiscal security for the region, the real issue lies in long-term recovery."The committee ... is planning events semester-long because we want to continue to give to the victims throughout their recovery," Kim said.


Heller prof. witnesses tsunami in Sri Lanka

For Heller School Adjunct Professor Jehan Raheem, a winter vacation trip to a Sri Lankan beach resort transformed within seconds into an unforgettable encounter with the horrific face of the tsunami disaster and, subsequently, into a relief mission.A few of Raheem's distant cousins were vacationing in the south of Sri Lanka that Sunday and they perished in the incident.


Students safe after tsunami
