Advocacy committee pushes new initiatives
The student senate's advocacy committee is currently tackling a set of new initiatives to enhance the quality of student life.Initiatives include the extension of C-store hours, the construction of a road between the Massell Quad driveway and the three chapels to decrease walking distance, and supporting the interests of sports clubs, committee chair Ezra Stark '05 said.
"We are extending hours to make it [the C-Store] more convenient for them," Stark said. "We are trying to revamp the meal plan. It's all about convenience and efficiency."
The committee's non-senate chair, Adam Gartner '07, said he and Stark polled students to determine what changes they would most like to see implemented. Gartner said the committee is composing a proposal for University treasurer Jeff Solomon to transform student identification cards into debit cards, able to work anywhere in the country.
"Why not create a system where regular credit cards used around the country can be available on our ID-cards on campus," Stark said. "Why have WhoCash, which is obsolete, when you can have real cash?"
Gartner said the committee is also working with sports clubs to create a special council advocating their needs, like raising finances for sports clubs and offering them more gym resources.
"Some of these clubs do a tremendous job representing the school in Nationals and then they have a hard time getting financed by the school," Stark said. "We need to create a system where they can represent the school on national scale."
Class of 2007 Senator Jenny Feinberg, who is involved with the committee, said, "We've known for a long time that this was something we needed to focus on and in light of the mock trial incident we realized this had to be a priority," Feinberg said, referring to the Mock Trial Team's recent difficulties in securing funds to attend a national competition in St. Petersburg, Fla.
