The 10 winners of the Brandeis Achievement Award, a $5,000 per semester scholarship awarded for service to the Brandeis community, were notified on Jan. 31, according to Student Union Vice President Erica Lemansky '05.Of the 121 applicants, the 10 winners were chosen by a selection committee that included five administrators, Lemansky and two other students.

"I believe that there are many students at Brandeis who don't receive scholarships upon their arrival at Brandeis, but in their years have really dedicated themselves to making Brandeis a better place and they should be recognized for doing so," Lemansky said.

Applications were due in December and required candidates to submit a transcript, rsum, letters of recommendation, and a one-page personal statement. The competition was open to sophomores, juniors and seniors with cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.25 who are not receiving certain merit-based scholarships.

"We looked for people who didn't necessarily join a million clubs and go to their meetings once a month," Lemansky said. "Instead, we looked for people who really committed themselves to a few activities in leadership positions."

Lemansky said the application process was held during the fall semester this year to accommodate deserving seniors. In the future, the scholarship will be awarded in the spring.
