San Antonio Spurs ousted from playoffs as questions about the team and the league resurface

As the NBA playoffs begin to wind down, many are surprised by the absence of the San Antonio Spurs from this year’s Western Conference Finals. After being defeated by the far younger, far more athletic Oklahoma City Thunder in six games, the Spurs were sent packing despite many believing that they had the greatest potential to rip the NBA Championship from point guard Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The Spurs’ departure begs many questions: Is this no longer San Antonio’s league? Is this the end for the Spurs’ dynamic trio of guard Manu Ginobili, point guard Tony Parker and center Tim Duncan? How much longer will coach Gregg Popovich remain at the helm? 




Judges win four in a row to break slump

The Brandeis men’s baseball team enjoyed a very strong showing last week, winning four of its five games, including a three-game sweep of conference rival New York University on Saturday. The squad’s impressive showing helps steady what had been a somewhat rocky season to date, and allows the team to draw on fresh forward momentum as they roll into the home stretch of the 2016 schedule.




Squads combine for two wins over tough week

The men and women’s tennis teams endured mixed results last week. The women’s squad went 2-1 while the men’s squad went 0-3. The women’s team defeated Trinity College 7-2 on Sunday but lost to Tufts University 9-0 on Saturday. The team also beat Bentley University 9-0 last Thursday. The men’s team lost to Trinity 6-3 on Sunday, Bowdoin College 7-2 on Friday and 5-4 to Tufts on Wednesday. Both teams now stand at a record of 8-7.


Golden State Warriors ascend to greatness in best statistical regular season in league history

The Golden State Warriors are off the charts — literally. In the 2015 to 2016 season, the reigning NBA champions became the first team to win 24 straight games to begin the season, the first team to never lose two games in a row and the first team to never lose to the same team twice. They set new records with their 54-straight home wins and 34 total away victories. 


Judges’ offense falters after week-long hiatus

The Brandeis men’s baseball team had a rough go of it this past weekend, dropping all four of its games against Tufts University and Bowdoin College. The squad has struggled to win games all season, and this weekend proved no different. The Judges fell in their two doubleheaders, resulting in an 0-4 performance, with one game against Eastern Connecticut State University being postponed until later notice. 


Women win by large margins in two straight events

The men and women’s tennis team continued their winning ways this past week. Though the No. 32 men’s team lost to Boston College on Saturday 5-2, they defeated Vassar College 9-0 on the same day. The No. 31 women’s team, meanwhile, defeated Bates College 6-3 on Sunday and Wheaton College 8-1 on Friday. The men’s record now stands at a solid 8-4 overall, while the women’s team improves to an even 6-6 overall on the season.


Table Tennis squad continues fast ascent

Every Tuesday, the table tennis club members storm the Linsey Multipurpose Room in the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center to practice and refine their skills in preparation for their matches. Coach Vincent Liung critiques and molds nine regular players while advising and guiding the remaining 20 beginner-level attendees. For two hours, the team battles it out in a room barely big enough to fit 29 players, let alone the two tables they need for actual play. 


Track teams manage smooth times at meet

The men and women’s track and field team traveled to Amherst College for the Amherst Spring Fling, using a number of strong races to grab fourth and seventh places overall for the men and women’s sides, respectively. The men took fourth place out of nine teams, scoring 68 points in the process, while the women finished seventh of nine teams with 46.5 points.


National Basketball Association offers surprising results outside of predictable high-profile teams

As the NBA season comes to a close, a look around the league offers a few interesting observations. While the top teams in the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder were expected to be successful, there are many surprises up and down in the standings. 





Tennis squads showcase strong on-court strokes

The men and women’s team continued their strong play over the weekend, going a combined 5-1 over six matches. The No. 32 men’s team picked up wins over Babson College, Wheaton College and No. 22 Bates College. The 31st-ranked women’s squad hosted the Nor’Easter Bowl and went 2-1, defeating Sarah Lawrence College and Christopher Newport University but narrowly falling to No. 6 Amherst College.

Every Chicago Cubs fan’s favorite word is “hope.” Every offseason brings hope that new top players will join the team. Every spring training brings hope for a great start to the season. And every April brings hope that the Cubs can put together a World Series winning team.



Columbia snags national title

This weekend, Brandeis hosted the NCAA Fencing Championships. After four days of fast-paced action, all three weapons for both the men’s and women’s sides featured competitive semifinal and final matchups on a raised platform in the middle of Red Auerbach Arena. The atmosphere was electric the entire time, as hordes of supporters came to cheer on their fencers. The University of Notre Dame, Penn State University and Columbia University sent notably large contingencies which featured school flags, raucous cheers and large cutouts of their fencers’ faces. Pool play was long and grueling as each competing fencer faced the other 23 in their respective weapon for a chance to land in the top four and continue on to the next day.
