Instead of vacationing in the Carribean or spending quality time at home, the Brandeis men’s tennis team spent their break taking on multiple nationally ranked opponents and dispensing all but one wtih absolute ease. The Judges faced all of these challenges head on and had an incredibly successful stretch, winning eight of their last nine matches since the break. Their only loss came at the hands of Bowdoin College, the number-two Division III men’s team in the nation.
With the release of the official schedule and summer training camps on the horizon, excitement for the 2018 National Football League season has definitely begun. We have four months and change until the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles take on the Atlanta Falcons in the season-opening battle of the birds. Before then, teams have the summer to put together the finishing touches on their rosters, and the most important event between now and the opening game is just days away. For months, top collegiate athletes have been touring the country to prove their worth and fulfill their dreams of turning pro. On Thursday, the first round of the draft will occur. All 32 teams will have one selection. This is usually the day where all the top prospects leave the board. Last-minute draft day trades and developments will always happen, but for the most part, scouts have already decided what constitutes first-round talent. Here are some of our predictions for how this years draft should go down on the offensive side of the ball.
The Brandeis capped off a busy week by falling to Emory University 10-1 on Saturday, recording a 3-3 record for the week. Besides for splitting the doubleheader with Emory, the Judges lost two more games to the Eagles on Friday, and won two contests against Fitchburg State University on Wednesday.
TEAMWORK IS DREAMWORK: Brandeis softball players celebrate a win against Emory University on April 14.
The Brandeis women’s tennis team had a busy week while the rest of the student body was on break. They were tasked with facing multiple nationally ranked opponents who gave Brandeis some stiff competition. After an incredibly successful start to their season, the Judges have now lost four of their last five matches, putting a damper in their season. However, it is important to consider their competition. Their last five matches have come against the No. 17 Skidmore College, No. 8 University of Massachusetts Amherst, No. 23 New York University, and No. 6 Tufts University. Stonehill college is also ranked 43rd in Division II.
Despite the massive hype surrounding the world series favorite New York Yankees coming into the season, the city’s other baseball team, the New York Mets, have quietly taken their place as talk of the town. Although the Mets didn’t make sexy, headline-grabbing free agent signings during the offseason, they seem to have put last season’s woes behind them. On the back of a recent 10-game winning streak, they have secured the best record in their division, as well as the entire National League. This development may be seen as shocking to the casual baseball fan, but die hard Mets fans have seen this coming for years — it was all a matter of health. For years, the Mets have dealt with devastating injuries to their starting pitching rotation at one point or another, as well as extended stints on the disabled list for key players such as Michael Conforto. Finally, with the exception of their injuries at catcher, the team has been virtually injury- free. Meanwhile, in the Bronx, the Yankees are barely scratching .500 and are clinging to third place in the American League East. Although the season it is still in its infancy and the Yankees are still an excellent team, there is increasing room to be optimistic in Queens.
After a 1-6 start to the season, the Brandeis baseball team looked to turn things around this past week. They won one game, but lost two more, leaving their record at 2-8
While the ground outside and the forecast over the coming weeks may not show it, we are officially in spring and with that comes the seasonal transition that sports fans everywhere are ready for. March Madness has left us with four battle hardened teams ready for their chance at glory. Baseball spring training is well on its way, with opening day right around the corner. The NBA regular season has been raging all winter long and teams have eight short games to make their final pushes before the playoffs. Here’s how the playoff picture has been shaping up for the NBA.
One must go all the way back to 1983 to find the last time a team from Los Angeles won the Super Bowl. Back to 1979 for the last time that team was the Rams. That might change, quickly. In the span of just a few short months, the Rams have gone from the basement to Super Bowl contenders, maybe even favorites. Arguably the most important step on this whirlwind revitalization came on Jan 12, 2017 as the Rams hired Sean McVay, a little known, yet incredibly promising Offensive Coordinator to be their Head Coach. For reference, McVay was 30 years old at the time of his hiring, making him the youngest Head Coach in NFL history. McVay entered a situation where the team had spent years at the bottom of the standings, they made a controversial relocation to Los Angeles, and they had a former number one pick at Quarterback who was playing like anything but the number one draft choice. That’s not to say the roster was devoid of talent, they just needed the right commander to bring the best out of them.
The Brandeis men’s and women’s tennis teams had an absolutely dominant weekend, going a combined 23-1 in games against Trinity College and Colby Sawyer College.

For the first time in four years, two English teams have progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League — and they’ve been drawn against each other. Liverpool and Manchester City, the Premier League’s two offensive titans, will face off in what promises to be the most exciting matchup of the round.
In 2009, when a 16-year-old Bryce Harper graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, baseball gained its next great prodigy, following in the footsteps of Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr before him. While other players garnered immense hype, the next great prodigy was overseas, tearing up opponents left and right at the same time as Harper was starting to show just how justified his hype was.
The Brandeis men’s tennis team entered Friday’s matchup as the number 20 Division III school in the nation. They had a 5-1 record and their only loss came at the hands of a Pamona-Pitzer squad that was ranked at 14. They had also defeated ranked opponent Bates College. Their season looked incredibly promising, but they were about to face their biggest task yet. Middlebury College was at the time the third ranked men’s team in the country and was showing no signs of slowing down. Had the Judges beaten the vaunted Panthers, it would have changed the course of their season and elevated the team to the company of those considered the nation’s top teams. However, that win did not come to fruition and Middlebury blanked the Judges 9-0. Even with the loss, the Judges did gain a spot in the national rankings, as they have the tiebreaker with Bates College. Brandeis fell to 5-2 on the season, while the Panthers continued their perfect season and improved to 5-0.
