Brandeis medical volunteers and staff at the 129th Boston Marathon

 The Boston Marathon is a cultural event which draws hundreds of thousands from across the world into the city and surrounding areas to cheer on runners in a grueling 26.2 mile course. On April 21, the 129th celebration took place with more than 31,000 participants entering the race including Brandeis Track and Field coach Michael Schmidt. This being his third marathon of the year, Schmidt ran at an impressive 5:53 minutes a mile pace, placing within the top 350 finishers. His final time of 2:33:53 was 29 minutes behind overall winner John Korir of Kenya who finished after 2:04:45 hours of running.

Waltham School Committee presented with preliminary Fiscal Year Budget

On April 4, the Waltham Public School Committee reviewed the preliminary budget for Fiscal Year 2026, marking a significant step forward in planning for the upcoming school year. The meeting included reflections on the budgeting process and the district’s priorities for the coming fiscal year.

Brandeis Jewish Bund holds protest to go “All out for Palestine”

 On Friday, April 4 at 4:00 p.m., the Brandeis Jewish Bund gathered on the Great Lawn for a demonstration and marched along Loop Road in support of Palestine. The gathering aimed to condemn the University’s “complicity in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians,” the Trump administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests/disappearances and the forces of U.S. imperialism, as explained in an April 2 post on the Bund’s Instagram page. Over the course of the demonstration, around 100 individuals gathered outside the University’s entrance, and onlookers ranged from administrative staff and faculty to eventual counter-protesters.

Reinventing to what end?

First, I heard the words, “we’re reinventing the Liberal Arts.” I was skeptical. Then I heard, “for the new global, digital economy,” and a wave of nausea on account of an unoriginal cliché followed. To make matters worse, “our students should have one foot in the street and the other in the library,” — this must be a sick and twisted joke dressed up in a sports jacket and tall black socks.

Notes to newcomers: Everything we learned

As the end of another academic year draws nearer, the members of this editorial board have been reflecting on the rhythms of college life; the exciting new beginnings, the inevitable mistakes and the subtle self-assurance that can only develop with time and patience. For those who are close to embarking on their college journey, it can be nearly impossible to know where to begin or what to expect. To help with this transition, we’ve accumulated advice from various members of this editorial board as they offer candid reflections on the lessons they’ve learned so far. Whether it’s navigating the ups-and-downs of new friendships, figuring out your major or simply finding your people, it is the hope of this board that these words can serve as a guide — and, most importantly, a reminder that no one has it all figured out, but we’re all learning alongside one another.

Will Archon Yearbook be reinstated this year after its 2023 disbandment?

The Brandeis Archon Yearbook club is working to be reinstated to once again  release yearbooks. The club will be taking a new approach to ensure the troubles that caused Student Union to relinquish their status as a secured club in 2023 do not arise again. Student Union President Rani Balakrishna ’25 started the initiative and has since passed the project on to an eight person executive board.

The rise and fall of the Nike Air Force 1’s

In 2016, I, like most other teenagers of the time, realized that the apparent key to fitting in — the so-called “missing piece” in the puzzle of adolescent chicness — was an unassuming white sneaker: Nike’s iconic Air Force 1. Once this registered, suddenly, they were everywhere I looked — at my school, at the local grocery store, stacked neatly in the cubbies where students had to store their shoes before my martial arts lessons. Sheepishly, I bought a pair for myself and vowed to never admit that there was a time prior to my ownership of them — and I certainly acted like it.

Should Division 1 athletes be compensated beyond scholarships?

For years, there has been an ongoing debate regarding whether full-ride scholarships are considered enough compensation for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes. While full scholarships cover tuition, room, board and additional fees, they often do not contribute to any further needs of these athletes. Now, legal and public pressures have led to the adaptation of the NCAA policy. D1 athletes now have multiple avenues for earning income, including Name, Image and Likeness deals, cost of attendance stipends and additional benefits from universities and third-party entities.
