This Thursday, March 27, Kaos Kids, Brandeis’s premier hip-hop dance crew hosted Brandeis’s yearly dance showcase: “Organized Kaos.” This event featured dance teams from Brandeis, such as Adagio and HWAA, plus teams from universities across the greater Boston area, including Lasell, MIT and Northeastern. The energy was electric as dancers performed tap, contemporary and hip-hop routines for a cheering audience. This lively performance demonstrated how dance creates community in many different ways. Pictures of the Kaos dancers were hung up outside the venue, allowing friends and fans to write messages of love and encouragement. Videos and speeches allowed the Kaos group members to congratulate their graduating seniors and honor the friendships built during rehearsals. Throughout the night, each group supported the next with lots of applause and compliments called out to the dancers on stage. Each performance was full of life, making it clear to the audience just how much hard work went into each dance. One of my favorite acts was from HWAA, Brandeis’s East Asian pop dance crew. Performing to “Midas Touch” by the K-pop group Kiss of Life, the members of HWAA exuded confidence and coordination. Another favorite of mine was Lasell University’s Pulse, who showed off their fast footwork to a medley of pop, R&B, and rap favorites. Thanks to Kaos for hosting such a fun, chaotic night!

For a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Brandeis holds an impressive array of diverse dance clubs. Even more impressive is students’ palpable devotion to strengthening the already commanding presence that dance has on the Brandeis campus and creating a space for this unique form of physical activity and art. In the words of Ballet Club Co-President Lilliana Aspromonte ’25, the ultimate “goal is to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and is able to dance.”

On Sunday, Nov. 12, Brandeis’ very own Adagio Dance Company presented their annual fall showcase. Filled with dances of all styles and skill levels, the showcase dazzled the audience, leaving them with a childlike wonder akin to what one would have meandering around a “Candy Land.”

On Tuesday, April 25, the Student Union Allocations Board emailed the Fall 2023 Marathon final report to club leaders and treasurers. Between first round decisions and appeals, clubs across campus requested a little over $2,912,000 of which $1,476,415 was allocated — this puts club funding across campus at approximately 49% of requested funding.

For a lot of students at Brandeis University, college is the first time they leave their homes and the friends they grew up with, and move into a brand new environment. They try out different classes and clubs and participate in all kinds of activities. To showcase the lives of the Brandeis students, the 2019 Family Weekend Variety Show hosted 13 student groups to perform for the community and visiting parents. A combination of improv, music, a cappella, dance and more were showcased last Saturday night, at the event hosted by Dean of Students Jamele Adams, Maryam Chishti ’20 and Arial Nieberding ’20. The Justice had the chance to talk to Rebecca Goldfarb ’21, the student coordinator of the event, about the process of putting on such a massive show and what she learned from being an organizer.

Every year, the Brandeis Latinx Student Organization holds their cultural show performance, Incendio, to showcase Latinx artists and activists who strive to bring attention and change to the issues impacting their community. The theme this year was “Golden Touch,” honoring the important works of individual members within Latinx culture. BLSO continues to be a significant part of the Brandeis community and their events help to engage and interact with students to learn and appreciate the Latinx culture and traditions.

Brandeis celebrated the 20th anniversary of Culture X in Levin Ballroom on Saturday, an event that featured a whirlwind of performers showcasing cultures from all over the world. Guiding the event was the overall theme of the show — “From Roots to Leaves, Grounded in our Histories.”

Culture X, the biggest cultural show of the semester, is entering its 20th anniversary! 16 artists and groups will be performing on Saturday night in Levin Ballroom. To preview this event, the Justice spoke to the CultureX chair team member, Gabi Rivero, about what clubs will be performing and what Culture X means to her. Other chairs include Maurice Windley '19, Brianna Brown '19, Connie Kai '22, Imani Islam '20 and Gabriela Macedo Telles '20.

Last Thursday, faculty returned to defend last year’s win at the University’s annual students versus faculty and staff basketball game called Hoops for Help, hosted by Brandeis Beacons. Although the faculty team fell short this year, the event still raised money for a variety of causes.

Upon walking into to Levin Ballroom, a poster depicting a brightly colored sunset hanging over the ocean with glittering letters spelling out “MATAHARI” caught my eye. As AYALA coordinator Kate Nguyen ’21 explained to me, “Matahari means the sun … [It] implies that we want to look towards a brighter tomorrow.” Each coordinator had their own idea for AYALA this year, but they managed to connect Matahari, the ocean and family under one distinction: connections. By making connections with others, we can build a brighter future for ourselves, but our very first connections begin with those we consider family. The ocean symbolizes the connection between all 11 Southeast Asian countries. Even the audience members were incorporated into the whole design! We were people from various backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures gathering around, connected by the ocean and the sun.

On Saturday, I had the privilege of seeing one of the most impressive displays of talent I have witnessed in my time at Brandeis: Culture X. This is an annual event co-sponsored by the Brandeis Intercultural Center and the Gender & Sexuality Center, and it highlights a range of artistic talents from a variety of different countries. There were opportunities for both individual performances and for student-led groups to showcase their talents. This year’s show, titled “One Love: Between the Crossroads,” was coordinated by six students: Janis Li ’21, Cassidy Van Cooten ’20, Kwesi Jones ’21 (who also served as the emcee for the show), Anwesha Ghosh ’18, Winnie Zhao ’20 and Siyu Liang ’18. Many of the performances were dances, and it was astonishing to see the number of different dance styles and the many cultures represented.

In the first round of Student Union elections on Thursday, 17 were elected to various positions on the Allocations Board and Senate. As in elections past, voter turnout was highest among the first-years and lowest among the senior class.

The Brandeis chapter of Relay For Life held its annual fundraising event in the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center on Saturday, raising over $40,000 for the American Cancer Society. The event ran from 5 p.m. on Saturday to 5 a.m. on Sunday and included performances from dance troupe KAOS Kids, a cappella group Rather Be Giraffes and comedy improv group False Advertising.

“‘Justice is love correcting that which revolts against love,’” Dean of Students Jamele Adams stated at the 11th annual Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on Monday night. The quote, which comes from the event’s namesake, was one of many shared that night by speakers and performers who wished to convey the many aspects of Black history and the Civil Rights movement that King embodied.

Members of the Brandeis community gathered Monday night in the Shapiro Campus Center Theater for the University’s 10th annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, which included various performances and featured a keynote address from Dr. Roy DeBerry ’70.
