It may come as a surprise, but Brandeis has a Quidditch team. Yes, you heard that right — the sport is no longer reserved for the wizarding world of “Harry Potter.” While lacking in witchcraft and wizardry, the University’s team is very real and a welcoming space for anyone who wishes to join. Founded in 2010, The Judges’ Quidditch team is one of many club sports, which are independent and student-run at Brandeis. They play against other universities in the college division of US Quidditch and have previously gone to nationals. Brandeis Quidditch, however, is about more than just playing a sport. It’s about inclusivity, teamwork and — when it comes down to it — having a good time.

As captain of two varsity teams, track and cross country, and a double major at Brandeis, Jac Guerra ’22, who identifies as a man with transgender experience, is no stranger to taking on challenges that others might find daunting. But even for him, navigating the National Collegiate Athletic Association guidelines while taking steps in his personal transition was not a simple task.

On Wednesday, Oct. 6, Brandeis Women’s Network hosted a conversation with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Margo Jefferson ’68. The event was held over Zoom and was moderated by Trustee Barbara Dortch-Okara ’71. Over the course of the event, Jefferson discussed her time at Brandeis, the trajectory of her career and answered some questions from the community.

TAMID Group at Brandeis, a “business organization that develops professional skills through hands-on interaction with the Israeli economy” as described on the club’s website, virtually hosted a guest speaker, Assaf Feldman, on Oct. 4. Feldman is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Israeli security company Riskified. Feldman talked about his life and the circumstances that prompted him to found the company, lending insight into the realities of the Israeli entrepreneurial ecosystem.

$9,060 for the price of on-campus housing (2020) at Brandeis — which contributes to the University’s cost of campus living being higher than the national average by about $3,600 — would appear to be enough to cover safe and sanitary living expenses. But according to the stories of students living on campus, this is not always the case. With Brandeis’ recent push toward a series of sustainability goals, a commitment to maintaining or replacing current infrastructure to sustain a healthy environment for their students seems overlooked based on some students’ recent on-campus housing experiences. A multitude of issues that have arisen within the last month involving students’ safety, health and well-being in the dorms have suggested a campus-wide problem with regards to communication and efficiency between students and various Brandeis departments that deal with residential life, suggesting an inattentive resolve to quell these issues. In most instances, students we spoke to were left frustrated and resorted to taking matters into their own hands.

Ben Simmons came into the National Basketball Association as one of the brightest stars who bore comparisons to the NBA legends Magic Johnson and LeBron James. Having been drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the midst of their rebuilding process, Simmons was expected to be the light that took the team out of the depths of the NBA, along with teammate Joel Embiid.

Student Union Secretary James Feng announced on Oct. 1 the results of the second round of Union elections. Each seat was uncontested, and the election concluded with the addition of five senators, one branch representative and two Allocations Board members to the Union. The new senators joined the Union Senate for the first time of their term at its Oct. 3 meeting.

The Union Senate did not charter, de-charter or recognize any organizations at the Sept. 26 meeting. Clay Napurano ’24, President Krupa Sourirajan’s ’23 appointment for the director of Health and Wellness, returned to the Senate to make another case for his confirmation after the Senate voted against his confirmation last week.

Students flipped through a stack of 4x6 cards, examining the different designs on each one and picking one or two out of the pile before passing the stack along. At first glance, it would be easy to mistake the trippy designs on glossy cardstock as nothing more than an opportunity to add some color to a blank dorm wall.

The Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections hosted a virtual event on Sept. 23 showcasing photos that tell the story of the University’s history. Surella Seelig, an archivist at the library, described the importance of the images, chosen from 100,000 photos taken throughout Brandeis’ history.

The Justice unanimously elected Sofia Gonzalez ’23 to the position of editor in chief for 2021-2022. The election took place over Zoom, on May 6, and was prefaced by a Q&A session with Gonzalez regarding her plans and qualifications for the position of editor in chief.

It is bittersweet saying goodbye to our seniors after a year of navigating school and student journalism in a pandemic — bitter because we’re saying goodbye, but sweet because we’re so incredibly proud of them for getting through this year and making the most of it. Each of our graduating seniors has made invaluable contributions to the Justice. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them. We as an editorial board want to take a moment to recognize each senior and celebrate their achievements.

The Prevention, Advocacy & Resource Center hosted a panel discussion last Friday about transformative justice, its implementation in higher education and the ways it can benefit the Brandeis community. PARC invited Brown University alumnus Camilla Pelsinger, Brown senior Izzy Acevado and social justice organizer Dara Bayer to speak about their experiences implementing the first formal transformative justice program in a U.S. institution of higher education.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the history of efforts to end sexual violence in America and raise “awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse" can be traced "from the civil rights movement to the founding of the first rape crisis centers to national legislation.” This year marked the 20th Anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is celebrated every April. On Friday, April 30, the Justice interviewed Tanashya Batra ’21 and Grace Lee ’22 from the Prevention, Advocacy & Resource Center over Zoom to learn more about their work, and what PARC has done to join with members of the Brandeis community during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Being busy with school and everything else for the past few months, I have had little time to watch any movies, or to keep up with the latest movie news. Although I have put several of the nominated films on my watchlist, I was not even aware of the date of the Academy Awards ceremony this year and had not seen any of the nominated movies to write a prediction piece. For that, I tip my hat to Mr. Dinlenc, Mr. Weintraub and those who come after me who can meet the task. Motivated by hot shame, as someone who considers himself to be a “fan of cinema,” I watched “Sound of Metal” this weekend.

Every year, Brandeis survivors and allies gather to raise awareness and strengthen solidarity among individuals impacted by sexual violence — to “Take Back the Night.” This year, the event took place virtually on Thursday, April 15, rather than in its traditional form of being an in-person community march.
