Tennis: Both teams win their dual matches at home
The men and women's tennis teams did not disappoint on their home courts last week. The women defeated Simmons College 6-3 last Sunday, while the men claimed a 7-2 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy last Friday. After a week off, the women returned to action against Simmons for their second and final match of the fall season. On their home courts, the Judges were able to defeat the Sharks 6-3 and improve to 2-0 on the year.
In doubles action, the women took two out of three matches to take the early lead on the day. The first doubles duo of co-captain Rachel Rosman '11 and Faith Broderick '13 easily handled the Simmons team of senior Mallie Macleod and freshman Allison Bodek 8-1. Co-captain Mackenzie Gallegos '11 and rookie Allyson Bernstein '14 also took the third doubles match 8-1. Nina Levine '12 and Alexa Katz '14 played to a tiebreaker, which they lost 7-2
Rosman, Broderick and Gallegos all won their matches at first, second and fourth singles, respectively. The three of them gave up only 10 games among their three opponents, with Broderick's opponent, Macleod, earning just one game win in the loss.
The match-clinching victory came for the team at the sixth singles spot, where Katz outplayed junior Maggie Taylor and won the match 6-1, 6-2.
Bernstein and Roberta Bergstein '14 lost their singles matches at third and fifth singles, respectively. Bernstein lost her match 6-1, 6-3. while Bergstein took a one-set lead in her match but was shut out in the second set and fell by 2 points in a 10-8 tiebreaker.
Coach Ben Lamanna said that Bernstein has a lot of potential despite her loss in singles.
"[Bernstein] is one of the best rookies we have," Lamanna said." "She was having some trouble adding offense but is a great defensive player. She will keep getting better as long as she continues to practice hard."
Lamanna also noted that was satisfied with how the women played.
"They played well," he said. "Not the best they have played, but they got the job done. ... We have beaten Simmons by more before, so there are always things to work on."
In its first and only dual match of the fall season, the men's squad faced the Coast Guard indoors last Friday due to rain. Lamanna said the team practiced indoors during the week before the match because they expected rain on Friday.
After a 9-0 win last season, the Judges continued their dominance of Coast Guard, winning the match 7-2 against "a really good squad," according to Lamanna.
Lamanna and Fred Rozenshteyn '13 noted that playing on the indoor courts changes the way the team plays its game.
"The biggest difference was the amount of time between point[s]," Lamanna said. "There are more errors because the court is faster, so it becomes more of a mental battle than a physical battle."
"The points are much faster, so you have to take your time or the match can quickly change," Rozenshteyn added.
The men were able to take an early 2-1 lead during doubles play. Simon Miller '11 and Nick White '11 teamed up at first doubles to defeat Coast Guard juniors Nick Martin and Greg Mitchell 8-5. Rozenshteyn and Ezra Bernstein '13 secured the Judges other doubles win in the third slot, defeating junior Matt Faha and freshmen Josh Fischer 8-1.
Steven Milo '13 and Dave Yovanoff '13 fell 8-6 at second doubles.
The Judges earned 2 more quick points in singles action, with Bernstein, at sixth singles, dominating Coast Guard senior Anthony Foss 6-1, 6-1.
At second singles, Miller defeated Martin 6-4, 6-2. White then took on Mitchell once again at first singles, and after a hard-fought match, Mitchell was able to split his day against White, earning a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Milo clinched the win for the team with a 6-3, 6-2 win over rookie Austin Dean 6-3 at third singles. Rozensteyn won 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth slot, while Yovanoff won 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 at fifth singles.
The men will travel to Lewiston, Maine Friday for the James Wallach Invitational at Bates College, Lamanna's alma mater. The women next play Oct. 15 in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Championship at Amherst College.
