Track & Field: Brandeis comes out on top at UAAs
The Brandeis women's track and field team had three first-place finishes, set two school records and broke one meet record, while the men's team had three All-University Athletic Association performances in the UAA Championships at Washington University in St. Louis. The women placed fifth in the meet, and the men placed seventh. The women's 4x800 meter relay team had the squad's most impressive race of the weekend, breaking the UAA record by nearly 4 seconds.
The team of Erin Bisceglia '12, Emily Owen '11, Grayce Selig '11 and Beth Pisarik '10 finished with a time of 9 minutes, 18.83 seconds, obliterating the previous Brandeis record. They also finished nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place Case Western Reserve University.
"[Bisceglia] put them right in the mix, and each leg after that their lead continued to grow," men's runner Paul Norton '11 said. "They were in it from the get-go, and it was a great heat for them."
Suzanne Bernier '10 set the other school record, breaking her own school-best in the high jump on her way to a first-place finish. She reached a height of 1.68 meters, a 0.03-meter improvement over her previous NCAA-qualifying and Brandeis record-holding height.
"She looked really good jumping, and it was a great way for her to end her UAA career," teammate Annifreed Sinjour '13 said of Bernier.
The win also marked Bernier's second UAA title in the high jump-she won the event at the 2009 UAA Indoor Championships.
Brandeis' third first-place finish was in the women's 1,500-meter run, where Selig barely held off New York University sophomore Maeve Evans with a time of 4:36.79 to Evans' 4:37.25.
"It was a picture finish. Everyone was running to the finish line to see the end of it, and the whole crowd got really into it," Sinjour said.
"It was a really tactical race," Norton said, adding "From 500 meters out, she made a huge move, and there were a couple girls with her, but she was able to hold them off."
Selig's win came just a week after she set the Brandeis record with a time of 4:33.91.
Pisarik finished just over three seconds off of Selig's time, grabbing fourth.
The women's team also claimed All-UAA honors in two other races. Alyssa Pisarik '12 finished second in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:49.76. The underclassman finished just 4 seconds behind Emory University senior Rebecca Flink.
The women's 4x100 relay team of Lucia Capano '11, Michelle Gellman '11, Brittany Bell '13, and Sinjour turned in a time of 51.28 seconds, finishing third.
On the men's side, the team was paced by its distance runners. Norton was named All-UAA for the fourth time this season, finishing second in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:19.47. He was the performer of the year at the UAA Indoor Championships in March after winning the 3,000-meter race and finishing second in the 5,000-meter race; Norton also finished second in the league cross country meet in the fall.
Also finishing second in his race was Aaron Udel '10, running the 800-meter race with a time of 1:57.72. He finished within 0.37 seconds off the championship time.
"It was a great race for Aaron," Devon Holgate '11 said. "He just blew by people at the end."
Holgate rounded out the All-UAA performances, finishing third in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:57.69. For Holgate, it was a 3-second improvement over his previous personal best.
"It went about as well as I could have expected," he said. "It was pretty windy, so I just relaxed in the pack and tried to be patient."
Several other runners on both squads grabbed points in the meet. For the women, Sinjour finished seventh in the 200-meter race with a time of 26.76 seconds.
In the 800-meter race, Owen finished fourth with a time of 2:24.08, while Bisceglia finished less than a second behind her, good for sixth.
In women's field, Capano finished fourth in the triple jump, while Kim Farrington '13 finished eighth. Desiree Murphy '10 finished eighth in the discus.
On the men's side, Brian Foley '13 finished sixth in the 400-meter race with a time of 51.53 seconds.
Though neither squad finished particularly high in the overall team rankings, both squads were happy with the results.
"It was a solid weekend for us-all the distance events had an All-UAA performance," Norton said.
"We did pretty well," said Holgate. "We did the best that we could given the size of our team."
Both squads will next compete in the Open New England Championships on Saturday.
