At the Rieger Tennis Courts on Thursday, the men's tennis team upset Division I opponent Bryant Univer 5-4. Brandeis fell to Trinity College 8-1 on Sunday, while the nationally ranked women's team defeated Connecticut College 7-2 on Sunday and Massachusetts Institute of Technology 5-4 last Tuesday.Against Bryant, the first doubles team of Simon Miller '11 and Nick White '11 won 8-5. Rookies Steven Milo '13 and Dave Yovanoff '13 handled Bryant at the second doubles spot, winning the match 8-0. At third doubles, Mike Tatarsky '12 and rookie Fred Rozeshteyn '13 held on to win their match by a close margin of 9-7, giving Brandeis the early 3-0 lead in matches.

The Judges seemed to be cruising to an easy win when Rozenshteyn gave the squad a 4-0 lead with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win at the fifth singles spot. However, the Bulldogs were not ready to give in. Sophomore Andres Orobitg put Bryant on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles over Seth Rogers '10. At fourth singles, Yovanoff played well against his Bryant opponent, recovering from first-set loss to claim the second set 7-5, only to get blanked in the third set.

With the match 4-2 in the Judges' favor, the top of the lineup took the court to try and secure the win for Brandeis. At first singles, White faced Bryant junior Cristian Balestrieri, and after losing a hard-fought second set tiebreaker, Balestrieri won 6-0, 7-6 (9-7).

With Brandeis' leading 4-3, Miller looked to clinch the match at second singles, but sophomore Juan-Martin Paredes won 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Coach Ben Lamanna stated the importance of remaining mentally tough in those kinds of situations.

"You just need to focus point by point," said Lamanna. "You need to remain mentally tough and focus only on the point and nothing else around you."

The most exciting match came at the third singles spot, where Milo faced Bryant senior Kevin Gardiner. After falling in the first set 6-4, Milo bounced back for a 7-5 second-set win. In the third set, Milo was able to take a crucial break point to go up 4-3 and proceeded to take advantage of a tired Gardiner and win the set 6-3, clinching the match for Brandeis.

"Steve outlasted him, breaking his will by the end of the match," said Lamanna. "He stayed mentally tough and played the big points well, the way that he wanted to play them."

The men also traveled to Hartford, Conn. to face No. 20 Trinity College on Sunday. Despite a number of close matches, however, Brandeis fell to the Bantams 8-1 and saw its three-match win streak snapped.

The Judges fell into an early hole, losing all three doubles matches.
