Senior guard Jessica Chapin '10 was an unstoppable force for the women's basketball team this season and has the award to show for it.The University Athletic Association awarded Chapin UAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year and named her to the 2009 to 2010 first-team All-UAA Wednesday.

Teammates Amber Strodthoff '11 and Morgan Kendrew '12 received honorable mentions.

Chapin attributed her success to her team's support.

"Honestly, I couldn't do it without my teammates," she said. "We wouldn't have been playing [strongly] at the end of the season without them. We play a lot of great teams over the year and it's a real honor to get this from the UAA. It's pretty special."

Chapin led the UAA in scoring with 405 points, an average of 16.9 points per game. She was second in minutes played with 32.0 minutes per game and assist to turnover ratio, which was 1.6 assists per turnover. She finished third in 3-pointers with 46.

Chapin was fourth in free-throw percentage with 75.9 percent and steals with 53. She finished sixth with 3.0 assists per game and a 34.8 3-point shooting percentage.

She also finished seventh in defensive rebounds, averaging 4.7 rebounds per game.

Chapin led Brandeis in eight categories: scoring average, points, field goals made, 3-pointers, free throws, assists, defensive rebounds and steals.

In 17 of the 24 season games, Chapin led Brandeis in scoring, and in 10 games she was the leading rebounder. She turned in four double-doubles during the year.

Strodthoff reflected on Chapin's on-court leadership.

"She was just an incredible leader," Strodthoff said. "In game time situations she was that confident presence, and we felt comfortable with the ball in her hands. We're really going to miss that next year."

As her collegiate career comes to a close, Chapin becomes the only player in Brandeis history to rank the top 10 in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

She finishes her career with 1,280 points, 521 rebounds, 262 assists and 243 steals. Those numbers are good for sixth, eight, sixth and third in Brandeis history, respectively.

In a game versus Carnegie Mellon University Feb. 7, Chapin broke two school records by knocking down seven shots from 3-point range, scoring 36 points in the game.

The senior guard also made history as the first Brandeis player to hit 167 career 3-pointers.

Guard Morgan Kendrew '12 finished eighth in the conference in 3-point shooting percentage with 33.0 percent and 12th in 3-pointers with 29. Kendrew was Brandeis' second leading scorer to Chapin.

"Morgan has a lot of talent, and she will be a very scary player that a lot of teams will have to deal with," said Chapin. "When she gets really focused and knows what she's doing, she's a very tough player to guard."

Brandeis' third UAA-recognized player was Strodthoff, who finished fourth in the UAA in rebounds with 140, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.

Her 91 defensive rebounds allowed her to place fifth in the conference, while her 49 offensive rebounds ranked seventh in the UAA. She led the Judges in blocks with 11. She followed Kendrew in scoring with 158 points.

Strodthoff noted how the team drives her success.

"[The team] pushes me every day in practice and [tries] to make me a better player. . Because of them I was able to get this honor," Strodthoff said.

With an experienced senior class leaving, Chapin offered advice for the team.

"A lot of younger girls are going to have to step up and provide leadership on and off the court," said Chapin. "I think Amber and Morgan will provide that leadership on the court, but people are going to need to be more vocal leaders."

Chapin continued, noting that leadership provided by Strodthoff and Kendrew could make next year's team "very successful."

Strodthoff believes next year's leadership cannot be predicted.

"I think it will be a completely different atmosphere," said Strodthoff. "We're going to have a whole new wave of freshmen. . Every year is truly different. It could be anyone really.
