CORRECTION APPENDEDThe Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational was held by the men's and women's indoor track and field teams on Saturday, which saw the women place first of six squads, while the men's team finished forth of seven teams.

Lucia Capano '11, who led the women's team, won three races and qualified for the NCAA Division III Regionals.

Capano won the triple jump with a leap of 11.27 meters (36 feet, 11.75 inches), which was better then the second-place finisher by 0.39 meters (1 foot, 3 inches).

"We tried something different for that [qualifying] jump, and it seemed to work," Capano said. "We're going to work on that, and hopefully I'll jump a little further because I'm a bit low on the qualifying scale. To compete I'll probably need to jump 0.1 to 0.2 meters higher [than before], but it's still nice to see my name on the Web site."

Capano went on to win the long jump with a jump of 5.3 meters (17 feet, 4.75 inches) and the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds, while finishing second in her leg of the 1,600-meter relay.

Suzanne Bernier '10 earned an NCAA qualifying standard and set a Brandeis record in the high jump with a jump recorded at 1.67 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches). The jump allowed her to advance to the NCAA Division II Championship.

The women had three other individual winners. Julia Alpaio '10 won the 600-meter dash with a time of 2:20.84. Beth Pisarik '10 won the 1,000-meter run in a close race, beating the second-place finisher by four-tenths of a second with a time of 3:01.47. Grayce Selig '10 won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:11.72.

The women ended their successful day by winning the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 9:47.21. Jess Girard '10, Erin Bisceglia '12, Beth Pisarik '10 and Hannah Lindholm '11 participated in the relay.

Capano was pleased with the team's results on Saturday.

"We did quite well for the first meet back; [Bernier] qualified, which we are so excited about since she hadn't before; we had some good turnouts; and we're very excited for the upcoming season," she said. "With the right training we can have a great team."

"I'm really proud of everyone," Bernier said. "It's really good to win since we came in second last year. It's a really great start to the semester. And it was good to see us in the top three in almost every competition [and] great to see Brandeis in the top three on the scoreboard. Even the boys had a good day, and it was really nice to see them step up as well."

Despite the losses of Ali Sax '09 and Meaghan Casey '09, Capano is excited about the team's chances this season.

"I'm hoping that by staying healthy the team can keep our place at the UAAs. Despite the losses, they were huge point scorers," she said. "We still need to step it up and we still miss them."

However, Capano is aware of her team's potential to succeed in future meets.

"We have a very strong distance team, which is exciting, so if we have kids that can win or come in the top three, that's great," she said.

For the men's indoor track and field team, Brian Foley '13 held on to win the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.44, just three- hundredths of a second ahead of the next finisher.

Devon Holgate '12 won the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:44.45, and despite being passed towards the end, Holgate came back on the last leg to win the race.

Aaron Udel '10 won the 800-meter with a time of 2:00.14, while Ben Bray '11 won the 1-mile race with a time of 4.23.23.

Both the men and women are in action again this Saturday at the Greater Boston Track Club meet at Harvard.
