Athlete of the Week: Suzanne Bernier '10
Suzanne Bernier '10 may be on the final stretch of her four-year career at Brandeis, but she is still jumping high and breaking records. At Saturday's Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational at Brandeis, Bernier, co-captain of the women's indoor track and field team, participated in just one event, the high jump. She easily took first place in the event, scoring 10 points for her record-setting jump of 1.67 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches).
Bernier broke the school record of 1.65 meters that she matched this December by 0.02 meters and placed 10 meters higher than second-place finisher and teammate Lily Parenteau '12.
When asked about the record-breaking performance, Bernier said, "I'm really excited; it's something I've always wanted to do."
However, Bernier did not just set a record with her jump. She also topped the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard by 0.01 meters.
Still, Bernier aspires to jump even higher.
"I'd like to get 5 feet, 6 inches or 5, feet 7 inches for a better chance in nationals," she said.
Much of her success is due in part to the fact that she only competes in the high jump.
"I did four events in high school, but now I just do the high jump," Bernier said. "I can just focus on the high jump and not have to worry about hurdles."
While she only has only one season left to complete, Bernier is still striving to improve. During the break, she went to her local YMCA and focused on conditioning, lifting and plyometrics to get in even better shape.
"I just want to get higher and perform better," she said. "Hopefully the team will follow suit."
Bernier and the rest of her squad are back in action Saturday at the Tufts Invitational.
