In a week highlighted by fall season championships and the start of the women's basketball season, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams did their part to earn a piece of the spotlight. In a dual meet at Babson College, the women dominated their local rivals by a score of 137-107, while the men got just enough out of their squad to earn a close win, 119-114. The men's team improves to 3-1 on the season while the women get back to 2-2.

The women's team did not fail to impress this week. The squad recorded first-place finishes in nine of 11 swimming events, and second- and third-place finishes in the other two events, while also recording wins in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Leading the way for the team was Angela Chui '12, who won three individual events. She clocked in first in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, all of which she won by more than 1.5 seconds. Although her streak of 29 consecutive wins was broken last week, Chui has maintained her dominant run this season.

Coach Jim Zotz attributes her success to her versatility.

"On a regular basis, our training consists of a combination of all stokes," Zotz said. "I like to develop versatility and put people into races based on weaknesses of other teams. That's just the philosophy of swimming."

In addition to Chui, three other swimmers recorded multiple wins in the meet. Hollis Viray '10 took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 26 seconds, a long 21.55 seconds in front of the second place finisher.

Captain Siobhan Lyons '10 took first as a member of the 400-yard medley relay with Emily Heldman '10, Holly Spicer '13 and Elise Allan '12. Lyons also placed first in the 200-yard butterfly in front of teammate Dasha Hentoff '10 and clocked in first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:50.27. Her time was 29.61 seconds ahead of second-place swimmer Lisa Rice '10.

Equally impressive was Dana Simms '11, who recorded two crucial first place scores in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Simms recorded scores of 221.25 points and 212.15 points in the one- and three-meter events, respectively, both of which were more than 50 points ahead of her Babson opponent.

The men's team's meet was much closer than the women's meet, but the squad inched past Babson for a win. The Judges lost both diving events but were able to earn first- place finishes in seven of 11 swimming events and four crucial second-place finishes in the other swimming events. Swimmers Aaron Bennett '11 and Marc Eder '12 led the way for Brandeis, both recording multiple wins. Daniel Danon '13 and Alex Cemaj '10 also added a pair of wins for the squad.

Bennett was able to take first in the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle, winning by 12.15 seconds and 17.95 seconds, respectively. In both events, a Brandeis swimmer came in second.

Eder took first place in the 200-yard individual medley over teammate David Fei '12, and took first in the 200-yard backstroke by over 13 seconds.

Eder was also a member of the winning team in the 400-yard medley relay along with Danon, James Liu '10 and Justin Wellins.

Aside from the first-place finishes, it was the second- and third-place finishes that gave the men the slim advantage over Babson. The squad took second place in the four events it did not win, and placed second or third in 10 total events. Liu, normally a multievent winner, recorded second-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. In both events, Liu lost by mere milliseconds to freshman Greg Bissett of Babson. Aaron Lefland '13 took a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, and Cemaj placed third in the 1-meter diving event, earning the team three points each.

When asked about the importance of earning second- and third-place finishes, Bennett noted the team's motivation in light of its ultimate suspension at the end of the season.

"It is great to have some depth and see some other guys swimming hard," Bennett said. "We have a lot to swim for, given the status of the program. It gives us a little extra fire."

Both teams will face crosstown rival Bentley University tonight at 7:30 p.m.
