WOMEN'S TENNIS: Top player sidelined with ankle injury
The women's tennis team's top singles and doubles player Rachel Rosman '11 suffered an ankle injury last week while practicing at the team's off-campus training facility in Needham, Mass. While running a team drill, Rosman came down hard on her right ankle. X-rays showed the injury to be an avulsion fracture in her right ankle.
According to orthopedics.about.com, an avulsion fracture is an injury to the bone at a place where a ligament or tendon attaches to the bone, causing a piece of the bone to break off.
Rosman said she will most likely not be able to play for the rest of the fall season, but she hopes to return in time for the spring.
"From what I have heard from other people who have had it like this, and from what I have heard from the trainers, I don't think there is any chance that I won't be back for the spring," she said.
As for the team, both Rosman and Coach Ben Lamanna agreed that the team has plenty of resources to maintain a strong lineup.
"I think there are a lot of girls on the team who are definitely going to step up," Rosman said. "I am really confident in my teammates to take it to the next level."
Rosman met with an orthopedist yesterday evening and will know more about the state of her injury and availability for this year at a later date.
