MEN'S SOCCER: Judges drop two at Carnegie and Emory
Through the first three games of the men's soccer team's longest road trip of the season, the Judges are still without a win entering the final game of the four-game stretch tomorrow night at Springfield College. The Judges lost at University Athletic Association opponents Emory University and No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University last weekend, as well as at Babson College last Tuesday.
The losses dropped the Judges to 4-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the UAA and was their fourth consecutive loss overall
Last Sunday at Emory, Brandeis dropped a 3-0 decision as the Eagles improved to 9-3-1 and 1-2-1 UAA.
Coach Mike Coven was not impressed with how his team played against Emory.
"We went into [the] game fairly optimistic, and we didn't play well at all and ended up making bad defensive plays, some lackluster play. I'm very disappointed in some of my players' game," Coven said.
The Judges trailed early on in the game, as Emory sophomore midfielder Zack Samuels stole the ball at midfield and sprinted past the Brandeis defenders to score in the 34th minute.
The second goal came in the closing seconds of the first half, as junior forward Michael Scannapieco put it in off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Nico Dalton.
The final goal came from Emory junior co-captain and defenseman Jake Graetz in the 54th minute on a penalty kick.
Brandeis had only two shots on goal in the loss, both of which came from forward Alexander Farr '11. The loss was especially dispiriting, as the team came off a strong defensive performance in a 1-0 loss against Carnegie Mellon last Friday.
Carnegie Mellon senior midfielder Ryan Browne scored on an assist from junior forward Pat Lutz for the only goal of the game. Brandeis goalkeeper Matt Lynch '11 tied a career-high eight saves, but that was not enough for the team.
"[Lynch] is coming off a streak of solid performances, including a seven save effort against [No. 7 University of Rochester]," Coven said. "He played really well against Carnegie Mellon. He's starting to come into his own. I think the team is letting him down a bit in front of him,"
Despite the lack of offense, Coven thought his defense played exceptionally well.
"We played relatively well against them. They scored 8 minutes into the game [but] we played them well, very well, almost even," Coven said.
The team began the week with a 3-2 loss at Babson, The Judges scored first with a goal from Farr in the sixth minute when he stole a pass from a Babson defender deep in Babson's zone, and put it in for the easy goal.
Babson quickly responded in the 23rd minute with a goal from rookie midfielder Eric Anderson. Anderson scored again three minutes later, putting in a rebound from his own shot.
The game was later tied but broken again by Anderson, who scored his third goal of the day for Babson in the 61st minute.
The Judges' game at Springfield starts tomorrow at 7 p.m.
