Student Union and Student Events members reach agreement on financial policy
After controversy and demonstrations Student Events will receive its funding from the Finance Board again. Student Union and Student Events leaders signed an agreement on April 17, according to Choon Woo Ha '08, immediate past treasurer.Ha notified club leaders in an e-mail on April 18.
The e-mail stated that, effective immediately, Student Events will "withdraw its October 29, 2007 proposal to Jean Eddy," and "the Student Union Finance Board [will] review the Student Events budget request effective for the fiscal year 2008-2009."
Last November, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy approved a proposal by Student Events to receive 17 percent of the Student Activities Fee directly from the Department of Student Activities instead of through requests to F-Board.
Members of Student Events, as well as Eddy, said at the time that the arrangement would improve campus social life and allow for a more efficient allocation of funds within the organization.
Union members said the proposal undermined the Student Union's system for allocating funds and denied student autonomy.
Ha said that the most important outcome of a recent series of meetings between the two campus groups was that "nothing we agreed upon violates the constitution or the bylaws."
He said that during the meetings, which included Ha, immediate past Union President Shreeya Sinha '09, Student Events Co-directors Lauren Barish '08 and Ilyssa Adler '09 and Student Events Treasurer Ben Gordon '08, discussed the various issues and needs of both sides and came to a compromise.
Ha said he was confident the Union could have solved the issue had Student Events originally come to Union members instead of the administration.
Sinha '09 wrote in an e-mail to the Justice that the Union looked at a list of concerns about the financial system held by Student Events, improved the system and then showed Student Events the changes the Union made during the meetings.
She said that the maximum amount of money Student Events would receive under the administration is now the organization's minimum amount of funding.
Gordon said during the meetings that the Student Union presented a new system in which the organization can move money between its departments if needed. For example, he said, one department in Student Events could give another the needed money to fund a concert.
"I think that Student Union has also shown that they see the value in Student Events; they're willing to bend over backward for all of our needs, which works for us," Gordon said.
Ha said the Union will try to accommodate Student Events' absolute needs. He also said that Student Events has an understanding of the system of the Office of the Treasurer and the F-Board.
"We'll try our best to make sure things are as efficient as possible," Ha said.
