A student was struck by a car Monday evening at about 8:45 p.m. while crossing South Street in front of the main gate, according to a student who witnessed the accident and alerted emergency responders. The student suffered only minor injuries, said the witness. The student injured was Max Hensley '10, his hallmates confirmed.

Hensley is at least the fourth student to be hit by a car on South Street in the last seven years.

Sgt. Brian Cogan of the Brandeis police said he could not comment on the accident, but did confirm that the person hit was a student, that he was going to be transported by ambulance to a hospital and that "I think he is going to be O.K."

The witness, Adam Curley '07 said that when he spoke to Hensley after the accident, Hensley seemed "totally communicative" and alluded only to having superficial wounds. Curley also said he overheard responders saying that they planned to transfer Hensley to a hospital in Boston for further treatment.

Curley said that he was driving north on South Street when he passed Hensley, who was standing next to the Brandeis sign in dark clothing and appeared to be preparing to cross the street.

"I remember thinking that if I was going to cross the street at night I might wear brighter clothing," Curley said. Then, Curley said that in his rearview mirror, he saw a blue Hyundai traveling in the opposite direction hit Hensley, who went up on the hood and then landed on the street. Curley said he then stopped and called 911 before approaching the other car.

The male driver of the Hyundai remained in the car while the passenger, a woman, was outside the car assuring Curley that it wasn't the driver's fault.

"She said he just came out of nowhere," Curley said.

Curley said he then saw Hensley leaning against a telephone pole on the side of the road after the accident. When Curley asked the woman how Hensley got there, she told him that Hensley just got up and walked.

Hensley was wearing a tie-dye t-shirt with a black zip-up jacket and dark sweats, Curley said. Hensley told Curley his name and that his neck was bleeding a little and his legs hurt. Hensley also said that he heard his glasses getting run over in the street.
