There will be two new faces patrolling the sidelines when the men's and women's soccer teams open their seasons Saturday. The men's soccer team hired Gabe Margolis, while the women's team hired Ryan Angel as assistant coaches over the summer.Athletics Director Sheryl Sousa announced both hirings July 10.

She said that both Angel and Margolis will also serve as equipment room managers.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the Brandeis soccer programs and the department of athletics as a whole," Sousa said. "In [Margolis] and [Angel], we are adding two quality individuals who bring a combination of enthusiasm and expertise in their fields to our staff."

The announcement was greeted with excitement by women's soccer coach Denise Dallamora.

"[The assistant coaches] are there everyday and all day, so they will be able to handle more things and allow for greater communication within the programs," she said.

A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Angel found coaching success close to his alma matter, serving four years as head coach of women's soccer and lacrosse at Rhode Island College.

As women's soccer coach, he led the Anchorwomen to their first postseason victories in 2002 and 2003 in the Little East Conference tournament and established Rhode Islands's first ever 10-win seasons in 2004 and 2005. Angel also spent one year each as an assistant men's soccer coach at Bryant College and as head women's coach at Salve Regina University.

"[Angel] is mature, organized, very friendly and very likeable," Dallamora said.

Margolis, a 2005 graduate of Wheaton College, has spent the past 11 months as a Division I assistant coach, first serving at Boston University from August 2005 through May 2006 and then at Northeastern University since May 2006.

A three-year player at Wheaton after transferring from Boston College, Margolis served as a captain during his senior season.

The Lyons made two NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure, including a trip to the Final Four as a junior. Margolis scored two goals and 12 assists for 16 career points while helping Wheaton to a 51-12-4 record.

Angel and Margolis will be the University's first ever full-time assistant soccer coaches at Brandeis, the athletics department said.
