WSoccer: Losing streak at four after two road defeats
The women's soccer team met hard times on its UAA road trip this weekend, as a 2-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University on Friday was followed by an overtime battle against Emory University Sunday that ended in a 1-0 heartbreaker when Eagles senior forward Nancy Wilson scored a goal with two minutes left in overtime. After dropping their last four games to nationally ranked opponents, the Judges are now 6-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the UAA.It took 98 minutes of physical play and impressive goalkeeping performances on both sides for the first and only goal to be scored in Sunday's game.
With the overtime period waning, an Emory midfielder chipped a long ball over the heads of the Brandeis defense to Wilson, who collected the ball at her feet and took advantage of the breakaway. Brandeis goalkeeper Betsey Medow '08 came out of the goal but was unable to cut down the angle, and Wilson coolly slipped it past her for the game-winner.
"[Wilson] placed a beautiful shot to the far post," Judges coach Denise Dallmora said. "[Medow] made the right decision to charge, but [Wilson] was very composed."
After Brandeis held its own in the first half, the team came out timid in the second, when play became increasingly physical. Lizzie Bremner '08 collided with an Emory player, landed awkwardly on her back and was sent to the hospital. Brittany Douglass '07 suffered a concussion right before the whistle was blown concluding regulation, but she finished the game at her spot in the defense.
The Eagles outshot the Judges with a mind-boggling 32 shots, compared to only eight by Brandeis. Medow recorded ten saves, three coming in a span of less than a minute at the end of the first half. Emory senior goalie Amy Franciscovich made five saves in the shutout.
The Eagles controlled the ball for much of the game, but Brandeis had consistent offensive surges. One of Brandeis' best scoring opportunities came in the 37th minute when Nickey Guertin '08 tried to slide the ball past Franciscovich from the six-yard box, but was denied by the seasoned keeper.
Dallamora credited Guertin for generating many of the scoring opportunities for the Brandeis offense, but the women were never able to capitalize on them.
The Judges have fought themselves to two overtime games this season, and ended up losing both, a statistic that Dallamora doesn't let overshadow how well she thinks the team played.
"They played awesome," Dallamora said. "They played tough. We were pretty even. They have a very strong goalkeeper and we forced her to make some very nice saves."
Despite the outcome, co-captain Lauren Gregor '06 agreed that the loss was one of Brandeis' best showings this season.
"Overall, it was the best game we've played all season," Gregor said. "We played really, really well. We played to feet and stepped up hard."
The Judges' first game of the road trip, a 2-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University, was the result of a surprising two-goal performance by Tartans rookie Abby Coffin, who came off the bench in the first half to record both goals.
Although Dallamora said that she thought the Judges had played well, she admitted her dissatisfaction with the team's record as of late.
"It's frustrating," Dallamora said. "I feel like the ladies deserve a win because they've been working so hard."
The Judges travel to Maine to take on St. Joseph's College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
