WSoccer: Judges fight to tie Springfield
Spectators standing up to leave the game were pulled back to their seats when Betsey Medow '08 reached out to deflect and cover a penalty kick with 47 seconds left in regulation, paving the way for a 2-2 tie with Springfield College Saturday at home. After a 2-1 win over host Simmons College Wednesday, the Judges are 3-1-1.The referee awarded Springfield a penalty kick after Brandeis was called for a hand ball in the goalie box, but Medow thwarted Pride junior Cari Capodiece's shot with a diving stretch to her left.
"I was really nervous because I've never had a [penalty kick] in a game before," Medow said. "Right before [Capodiece] kicked, I just picked a side and went for it."
The initial deflection bounced in front of the goal, but Medow quickly pounced on it, regaining possession and eliciting an audible outburst of relief from the Brandeis bench and spectators.
"[Penalty kicks] are so hard because it's just a guessing game," captain Lauren Gregor '06 said. "The shooter has the advantage. But we had faith in [Medow] and she made a great stop to preserve the game for us."
Lisa Kaplin '07 tallied both goals for the Judges, one in each half. Only eight minutes into the game she fired a bullet that was too much for rookie Springfield goalie Sue Jenney to handle. The Pride scored a goal of its own 20 minutes later off a one-timer that found the back of the net.
The Pride's quick throw-ins forced the Judges' defense to organize quickly in the first half, which was dominated by Springfield.
"We really needed to play to feet more," assistant coach Kendall Cox said of the first half. "We have to play with urgency but also composure."
Brandeis settled down and struck first after halftime. A long throw-in by Brittany Douglass '07 found Gregor's foot and she deflected a shot off the crossbar. Kaplin was there to head it in, giving the hosts a fleeting 2-1 lead. Springfield scored the equalizer only five minutes later off a shot that Pride rookie Lauren Peltier slipped past a charging Medow.
The physical play during regulation took its toll in overtime with the players looking more fatigued as the game wore on. Both teams had scoring opportunities, but neither was able to break the deadlock. One of Brandeis' best chances came in the final seconds of the final overtime period when a shot by Gregor from inside the box was stopped by Jenney. Jenney had 12 saves in the game and Medow had seven.
"[I told the team] that it was sudden victory," coach Denise Dallamora said. "[I told them] to control the game and play their style and shoot more, because one of them is going to go in."
The Judges host Wellesley College today at 4:30 p.m. before visiting Bowdoin Sunday at 1 p.m.
