UAA Tennis Championships: Emory dominates in usual fashion, wins both titles
The newly renovated Rieger Tennis Courts were put to good use this weekend as every men's and women's tennis team in the University Athletic Association came to Waltham for the conference championships. Brandeis hosted the event for the first time in school history while also using space at Bentley College, Wellesley College and Nipper Maher Park. Like they've done so many years before, the Eagles flew over the rest of the field. Emory University won both the men's and women's championships with the men clinching the title in a 7-0 shutout of No. 2-seeded University of Rochester on Sunday while the women beat Washington University 8-1.
Odgers was the only men's player to suffer a loss throughout the entire tournament for Emory, losing to Brandeis' Sam Jonas '07 in Emory's 6-1 win over the Judges Friday.
The women's team was just as dominating, with their only loss coming when Washington University senior Kacie Cook beat Emory sophomore Richelle Marsigian in the No. 2 singles spot. All of the other players won their matches in straight sets.
Emory has had a longstanding stranglehold on the UAA tournament. The men's team has won every year since 1990 and the women's team has won every year since the tournament's inception in 1987. The Brandeis men's team is the only other team to win the tournament, taking the title in 1989.
